Second inning lifts Kenyon over Muskingum

GAMBIER, OH – The Kenyon College baseball team used a three-run second inning to take the non-conference matchup against Muskingum University. The Lords move to 11-6 on the season while the Muskies fall to 10-7.

In the first inning, each starter faced the minimum and sat the side down in order. In the top of the second, Muskingum put runners on first and second with two outs, but Kenyon starter Hopper Rowe pitched his way out of the jam.

With one out in the home half of the second, Luke Meister started the inning with a line-drive single into left field and moved to second on a wild pitch. Tripper Capps placed a single to the opposite side of the field, moving Meister to third. A Will Sturgeon walk loaded the bases and brought up Drew Robinson. Robinson roped a ball into the gap for a double, scoring Meister and Capps. In the next at-bat, Alexander Hoskins lifted a sacrifice fly to score Sturgeon and give Kenyon a 3-0 lead.

The Lords added another run in the bottom of the fourth as Robinson came around to score on a wild pitch. The Muskies prevented the shutout in the top of the sixth, pushing one across on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly with one out.

With one out and the bases empty, Meister blasted a home run to left, restoring the four-run advantage.

With outs running low for Muskingum, the Muskies hit two solo home runs in the top of the eighth to bring the game within two. In the bottom half of the inning, the Lords loaded the bases but couldn't get a run across.

In their final at-bat, Muskingum put runners on first and second to force a Kenyon pitching change. Joel Biery came into the game and struck out the next two batters, slamming the door and securing the win.

The Lords have a few days off before starting conference play at Hiram on Saturday.
