Ladies split two on third day of Florida games

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- After a game-one, 12-9, extra-inning loss to Rockford University on Tuesday, the Kenyon College softball team bounced back in game two by defeating New Jersey City University, 8-0, in a five-inning game cut short by the run rule.

The Ladies started out against Rockford by building a 6-0 lead. In the first inning, Grace Finn reached base on a walk. Following another walk and a single, Finn came around to score when Bella Albrecht hit into a fielder's choice.

The Ladies then capitalized on three Rockford errors in the second inning and scored five more times. The Kenyon women paired the mistakes with singles from Albrecht, Maddie Friday and Nicole Bishay, as well as a double from starting pitcher Emily Pater.

With the ball in her hand, Pater cruised through her first six innings of work, holding Rockford scoreless, while giving up just six hits. In the seventh inning and still holding a six-run lead, things came unglued for Pater and the Ladies.

Rockford started the seventh with a walk, two singles and a Kenyon error. Tori Rogers relieved Pater, but Rockford didn't let up. Pater ended up returning to pitch again, but by the time the inning was over, the Ladies yielded eight runs on five hits, an error and two hit batters.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Kenyon bats got back to work. Albecht led off with a double and, later, Clare McMahon and Friday produced run-scoring hits to tie the game up at 8-8, sending things into an extra inning.

Rockford (1-0) kept its offense chugging along and used a Kenyon error to score four more times in the top of the eighth inning. In the bottom of the inning, Kenyon got one run back on an RBI single from Pater, but that finalized all game-one scoring.

In the second contest of the day, the Ladies took their game-one frustrations out on New Jersey City. Kenyon scored once in the first, four times in the second and then twice in the third to jump out to a 7-0 advantage.

The Ladies did get some assistance from the New Jersey City defense, which made four errors in those first three innings, however, Sara Campagna and Finn came up with some big hits to pace the Kenyon offense.

In the bottom of the fifth, needing just one run to end the game early via the run rule, Kenyon got a single from McMahon, a walk from Natalya Delsante, a hit-by-pitch from Persy Hort and then a walk from Madde Hyland, who forced in the game-winning run.

Bishay pitched game two for Kenyon and held New Jersey City (0-4) to just two hits in five innings. She didn't walk a batter and she struck out two.

Back in the batters' box, Pater had a big day. In the two games combined, she was 4-for-5 with two RBI. Friday was 4-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBI, while McMahon was 4-for-7 with three runs scored and an RBI. Additionally, Finn scored five runs on the day and Albrecht plated three runs.

The split put Kenyon's record at 5-1. The Ladies have Wednesday off and will return to the Lee County Sports Complex on Thursday for games against Drew and Immaculata universities.
