Lords come back in game two to sweep Fighting Scots

FORT PIERCE, FL – It took two runs in the top of the seventh in game two for the Kenyon College baseball team to beat Monmouth College after beating the Fighting Scots in game one, 10-3. The doubleheader sweep moved the Lords to 2-3 on the season while Monmouth dropped to 4-4.

GAME ONE

In the top half of the first, Monmouth started the game with a hit batsmen that moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt. An error by Tripper Capps held the runner where he was but put runners on the corners. A line drive through the left side scored the game's opening run. Kenyon starter Frank Lynch settled in by getting a groundball double play and a strike out looking to end the frame. In the home half, Malcolm Gaynor tripled over the head of the right fielder but would be stranded there.

Lynch faced the minimum in the second to bring out the Kenyon offense. Alexander Hoskins led off with a flyout to center field but Capps responded with a double down the line. Edwin Groff followed with a single of his own before Drew Robinson reached on an error to score Capps. Gaynor, Nate Rosen, and Alex Gow added base hits, bringing the score to 5-1. Rosen came around to score on a wild pitch. Hoskins, coming to bat for the second time in the inning, singled in Gow and capped the seven-run inning.

From then on, Lynch settled in by sititng the Monmouth side down in order. In the bottom of the third, Groff reached on an error before Robinson sent one over the fence to extend the lead. Rosen brought in the Lords' final run of the game as he singled to bring in Gaynor.

Including his strikeout in the second, Lynch sat 13 Fighting Scots down in a row. Lynch finished his day pitching six innings, giving up an unearned run, and striking out six.

Monmouth added two in the top of the seventh on a two-run home run but Kenyon finished the side and secured their first win.

GAME TWO

Game two of the doubleheader turned out to be a pitcher's duel. The Scots scored what looked to be the game's only run in the first inning on an RBI single. In the top of the fifth, Kenyon looked as if they were about to score a run but the tying run got cut down at the plate, keeping Monmouth ahead.

With Monmouth starter Nick Corman still on the mound, Andrew Rabinowitz started with a single through the left side. Luke Meister came on to pinch run for Rabinowitz before Alex Hoskins came up to walk. Capps hit a bouncing ball to shortstop and was thrown out but moved the runners to second and third with one out. Groff struck out, leading to a Robinson intentional walk. With the bases loaded and two outs, Will Sturgeon came up clutch, singling to left field, scoring Meister and Hoskins. After six scoreless innings, the Lords took the lead in their final at bat.

In the bottom half of the seventh, a Monmouth single, groundout to move the runner, and a passed ball gave the Scots a chance to tie the game up with two outs. With the game on the line, Monmouth grounded out to Capps at third to end the game.

Kenyon looks to carry their momentum into their Thursday game against Gettysburg College. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
