Ladies fall to Scots in close games

WOOSTER, Ohio – On Tuesday night, the Kenyon College softball team lost a pair of heartbreaking games to The College of Wooster. Game one saw the Fighting Scots erase a two run Kenyon lead in the bottom of the sixth to win 5-4. In game two, the Ladies tied things up in the top of the seventh to force extra innings where they would fall 3-2. The losses dropped Kenyon to 20-10 overall on the season and 2-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

GAME ONE

In the top of the first inning, Grace Finn led off the game with a double down the line, giving the Ladies a prime opportunity to score. The next hitter, Sara Campagna, cashed in on the chance with a double off the right fielder's glove to score Finn. Kenyon looked as though their momentum was building, but a line drive double play stalled the offense enough for Wooster to escape the inning.

In similar fashion to the Ladies, the Scots' leadoff hitter started the home half of the inning with a base hit. On the next at-bat, Wooster tied the game up with a double into the left-center gap. With one out and a runner on third, the Scots plated another run on a sacrifice bunt to take the lead.

Kenyon found success with the leadoff batter once again as Natalya Delsante doubled to start the second inning. Nicole Bishay moved Delsante to third on a flyout to right field before Clare McMahon, the current NCAC Player of the Week, doubled in Delsante. Kenyon reclaimed the lead on Maddie Friday's first home run of the season. Going to the bottom of the second, the Ladies held on to a 4-2 lead.

With a combined six runs in the first inning and a half, the Ladies and Scots looked to enter a slugfest, but the pitching settled in. Kenyon held Wooster scoreless in the bottom of the second and neither team scored for three straight innings.

The Ladies looked as though they would add another run in the sixth inning as Delsante singled and Bishay doubled to put runners in scoring position. The Scots were able to retire the next two hitters on a strikeout and a groundout, keeping the game within reach.

Wooster started the bottom of the sixth with three straight singles and a fielder's choice to tie the game at four. A diving catch by Bella Albrecht kept the Scots off the board momentarily but Wooster took the lead on a bases-loaded walk.

Trying to tie the score or take the lead, Finn doubled with one out and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Back-to-back flyouts to right field ended the game as Wooster took game one, 5-4.

GAME TWO

In another pitcher's duel, the Scots scored the only run for the first six innings in the bottom of the first on an error.

In the top of the third, the Ladies threatened by putting runners on the corners but a strikeout ended the frame. In the sixth, Bishay reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on Emily Pater's groundout. Bishay advanced to third on a wild pitch during McMahon's at-bat but Wooster escaped the Kenyon pressure once again.

The Ladies finally cracked the scoreboard in their last at-bat. Finn laced a single followed by a walk to Campagna, giving Kenyon baserunners with one out. Emily Buckwalter doubled to the gap, scoring Finn and tying the game. Campagna was thrown out trying to score, but the Ladies' lineup tied the game.

In the eighth, Delsante started things off with a bloop single to third base. With two outs, Delsante moved to second on a wild pitch during McMahon's plate appearance, only to have McMahon hit the pitch. The Ladies loaded the bases with a walk, but Wooster forced a fly out to end the Kenyon frame.

By rule, the Ladies started the 10th inning with a runner on second. Bishay singled Delsante over to third and later stole second. McMahon lifted a sacrifice fly down the left field line, giving the Ladies their first lead of the game.

Wooster moved their automatic runner up to third on a groundout. The Scots wasted no time bringing the run in with a double on the first pitch to tie the game up. A couple batters later, Wooster ended the game on a sacrifice fly, downing the Ladies.

The Ladies look to bounce back with a home doubleheader against Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
