Game Recap: Baseball |

Lords extend record-breaking win streak

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Taking to the road Saturday, the Kenyon College baseball team carried with it a 12-game win streak to DePauw University. By the end of the day, that program-record streak moved to 14 after the Lords registered 12-1 and 4-3 wins over the host Tigers.

The Lords, who haven't lost for a month, are now 19-6 overall and sit atop the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) standings with an unblemished 8-0 mark. The doubleheader loss dropped DePauw to 10-14 overall and 3-5 in conference competition.

In game one, Kenyon faced, perhaps, the greatest threat to its streak. DePauw lefty ace Micahel Vallone was on the mound and sporting a 6-0 record. On the other hand, the Lords had their ace Alex Gow throwing, as well.

It was an expected pitchers' duel through five innings. Gow did not yield a run, while Vallone allowed only a two-run homer to Nate Rosen. In the top of the sixth, things went south for Vallone and the Tigers as Kenyon scored 10 runs on seven hits, three walks and two errors.

Vallone started the sixth by loading the bases with a hit-by-pitch, a walk and single. He then was replaced by Justin Pelley, who also failed to halt the Kenyon attack. The big hit of the inning came from Malcolm Gaynor, who ripped a three-run double to left center. Other run-scoring hits came from Drew Robinson, Luke Meister, Tripper Capps, Will Sturgeon and Gow.

By the time the inning ended, Gow had more than enough run support. He went back out to the mound and finished the abbreviated run-rule game. In his seven innings of work, he fanned nine, while allowing just one earned run on eight hits and a walk. Those numbers moved him to 6-0 on the season with a 0.86 earned run average and 69 strikeouts in 42 innings pitched.

Game two was more closely contested. After Kenyon scored two unearned runs in the top of the second inning, DePauw matched that output with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.

In the fifth inning, Alexander Hoskins homered to right field off of DePauw starter Joe Runnells. Then, in the eighth inning, Meister tripled and later came around to score on a fielder's choice put in play by Sturgeon. That gave the Lords a 4-2 edge.

Meanwhile, Kenyon starting pitcher Frank Lynch gave way to the bullpen after going 5.1 innings and allowing just the two runs on three hits and two walks. He also struck out four.

In the bottom of the eight inning, DePauw got one more run back and had runners on second and third with no one out. A call to the Kenyon pen brought out senior Joel Biery, who struck out the first two batters he faced. He hit the next batter and then got out of the jam by striking out one more.

In the ninth inning, Biery struck out two more to earn his fifth save of the season.

Back at the plate, Meister and Gow both led the Lords with two-game combined 3-for-7 performances. Meister scored four times and had one RBI, Gow scored once and had one RBI. Hoskins ended up 3-for-8, while both Sturgeon and Gaynor posted three RBI.
