Game Recap: Baseball |

Big Red snap Lords' streak

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College baseball team saw their 14-game win streak come to an end on Wednesday against the Denison University Big Red. The Lords held an advantage for most of game one, but the Big Red came back in the ninth to force extra innings where they went on to win, 8-7. In game two, Denison jumped out to an early lead and never looked back on their way to a 13-3 run-rule victory over the Lords.

GAME ONE

Facing off against Kenyon starter Zach Frizzera, the Big Red started the game with a double down the line, putting the leadoff batter on base. A few hitters later, Denison scored the game's opening run on another double.

It wasn't until the bottom of the third that the Lords got the offense going. Drew Robinson started the inning by reaching on an error, advancing to second on the overthrow. Immediately after, Alexander Hoskins singled in Robinson to tie the game up at one. Malcolm Gaynor reached base on a hit by pitch followed by a Nate Rosen single to load the bases for Alex Gow. Gow lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, giving the Lords a 2-1 lead. Andrew Rabinowitz sent a grounder down to third base for what looked to be an inning-ending double play, but Rabinowitz beat out the throw to first, pushing the Kenyon lead to 3-1.

From that point on, the Lords' pitching staff started to settle in. Kenyon plated two more runs in the bottom of the fourth as Gaynor brought in Will Sturgeon and Rosen brought in Robinson.

An inning later, Rabinowitz led off the fifth with a double followed by Tripper Capps' soft single to second base. On the next batter, Sturgeon lined a ball into left field to extend the lead to 6-2.

In the home half of the sixth, Gow lifted another sacrifice fly to right to score Gaynor and put the Lords up 7-2.

Determined to not go away quietly, Denison forced a walk and a single with two outs in the seventh. A double into the right-center gap scored one but still kept the pressure on Kenyon to get out of the inning. Jake Davidson hit the first batter he saw before striking out Josh Bohn looking to end the inning.

In the top of the eighth, a leadoff single chased Davidson from the game and brought in Joel Biery for a six-out save. A hit by pitch and error in right field loaded the bases for Biery. With the Big Red still within striking distance, Biery forced a strikeout and two fly balls to end the side and escape the danger.

Down by four runs in their last at-bat, the Big Red started the ninth off with a single up the middle. After a flyout, another single put runners on first and second. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases and brought in a run as the Denison momentum started to mount. On the next batter Biery faced, Owen Wilson singled into right field, scoring two and bringing the game within one. A flyout with runners on first and second gave the Lords another out and a chance to keep their win streak alive. That was until Eric Colaco lined a single to Hoskins in left field. Hoskins had a shot to end the game on an outfield assist, but his throw came in too high for Rabinowitz to get the tag down in time. Biery exited the inning on a third flyout, but not before Denison tied the game up.

In extra innings, a double to lead off the 10th inning and a flyout to deep center field placed a runner on third with one out. The Big Red wasted no time bringing in that run as Bohn registered an RBI single to take the lead. In their last chance, Luke Meister gave the Lords life with a single of his own, but a flyout and a pair of strikeouts ended the game.

GAME TWO

The Lords looked to rebound from the extra-inning defeat but couldn't get the start they were looking for as Denison plated a run in the opening inning.

In the second, the Big Red scored seven runs on four hits and two walks to go up 8-0. Denison picked up right where they left off in the next inning, scoring four more on two hits and three walks, pushing the gap to 12-0.

Kenyon tried to fight back in the bottom of the third as Robinson started the frame with a walk. After a strikeout, Gaynor and Rosen singled to bring around the first run for the Lords. Rabinowitz added another run on his single down the line, but that was all Kenyon could muster up in the inning.

Denison scored their final run of the game on a double in the fourth inning, extending the lead to 13-2. The ballgame went quiet until the bottom of the seventh inning when back-to-back errors gave the Lords two baserunners. Rosen followed that up with a walk to load the bases for J.J. Conway. Denison attempted to turn a double play, but Conway beat the throw to first, allowing Preston Henigan to score. The Big Red shut down the Lords' bats and ended the game on a pair of strikeouts to sweep Kenyon on the mercy rule.

The Lords, now 19-8 overall and 8-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, look to regather ahead of their doubleheader matchup with Wittenberg University on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for noon at McCloskey Field.
