Lords earn postseason berth with win over Wabash

GAMBIER, Ohio -- With Saturday's 26-1 win against the Wabash College Little Giants, the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team locked down one of four spots in the 2022 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, which begins with semifinal games on Wednesday, May 4.

Saturday's victory bumped Kenyon's records to 11-3 overall and 6-1 in NCAC play. The berth in the upcoming conference tournament is both the Lords' fourth in the last five seasons and their ninth in the last 11 seasons.

In addition to the victory, the Kenyon program also celebrated, at halftime, the 50th Anniversary of the 1972 Lords team that went 12-1, as well as Senior Day at the conclusion of the game.

One of the 17 seniors honored was Ethan Dewbrey. He led the Lords' attack against Wabash by ringing up six points on two goals and a game-high four assists. Fellow senior Matt Pollack racked up five points on a game-high four goals and one assist. Cameron Longway tallied five points on three goals and two assists, while Mike Asuncion, another senior, had four points on a goal and three assists.

Other seniors who found their way on Saturday's scoresheet included Declan Curry, Will Harrigan, Ian Gobron, Sam Hatfield, Kern Byrnes, Will Sayegh and Will Robbins.

On the other side of the field, senior goalkeeper Mayo Amorello played a little more than 21 minutes, made one save and kept the Little Giants scoreless. Jack McClellan and Ryan Matarese finished off the game in front of the Kenyon net and made a combined 10 saves with just one goal yielded.

Kenyon, which outshot Wabash 67-16, broke out of the gates with an 8-0 lead after one quarter of play. Eight more goals were added to that total before Wabash scored its lone goal with 1:49 left in the second quarter. Following that, the Lords scored three more times and went into the halftime break with a 20-1 lead.

The Lords slowed things down in the second half of play, but by the time the game ended, 17 Kenyon players had at least one goal and 22 had at least one point.

With the loss, Wabash fell to 3-11 overall and 0-7 in the NCAC.
