Lords prevail against Yeomen

GAMBIER, Ohio – In its final home game of the regular season, the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team defeated the Oberlin College Yeomen, 12-5. With the win, the Lords boost their record to 12-3 overall and 7-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

In the opening quarter, Jack Giuffre registered three assists on four Kenyon goals. Giuffre's first assist came less than a minute into the game as he found Declan Curry for the Lords' first goal. Just over 30 seconds later, Giuffre found Mike Matteo to put Kenyon up 2-0. With 7:06 left in the first quarter Cameron Longway zipped a shot into the back of the net off another Giuffre pass. As the clock approached two minutes left in the quarter, Mike Matteo increased the Kenyon lead to four. Oberlin found its first goal of the game on a man-up opportunity with 30 seconds left in the quarter.

In a similar fashion to the first quarter, the Lords scored two goals in a minute as Joe Boesel extended the lead to five. On Boesel's first goal, Giuffre notched his fourth assist on the day while Longway helped on the second goal. Before halftime, the Yeomen scored their second goal, bringing the score to 6-2 at the half.

Giuffre continued to power the offense, finding Joe Bolea for another goal less than 30 seconds into the second half. Oberlin scored their second man-up goal of the game before Giuffre scored on Kenyon's extra-man chance. Giuffre put his second goal of the game in the back of the net off Matt Pollack's pass with 5:20 left in the third quarter, extending the Lords' lead to 9-3. The Yeomen got that goal back with 53 seconds left, bringing the game to 9-4.

In the final quarter, neither team found the back of the net until Curry beat the Yeomen defense with 10:21 left. Oberlin scored another with 5:42 left in the game, but Matteo sealed the Yeomen's fate with his goal two minutes later.

On the day, Giuffre netted two but assisted on six of the Lords' goals while Matteo and Boesel scored three apiece. In net, Mayo Amorello made 16 saves to stall the Oberlin offense.

The Lords hit the road for their final regular-season contest against Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday.
