Pollack powers Lords past Tigers

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – On a cold and blustery Saturday in Greencastle, Indiana, the Kenyon College Lords picked up a conference win against the DePauw University Tigers by a score of 15-5. The Lords looked strong on both sides of the ball to bounce back from a loss to rival Dennison last week. The win moves the Lords to 7-3 on the season and 2-1 in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play.

The Lords wasted no time getting going on the offensive end, scoring two goals within the first minute of the game, one by Weston Powell and another by Matt Pollack. The Tigers struck back quickly with a goal of their own on a man-up opportunity but Mike Matteo found the back of the net for Kenyon less than a minute later to put the Lords up 3-1. Matteo's goal was produced by Rollins Heath's second assist of the game.

With a man-up opportunity presented to them in the first quarter, the Tigers did not squander their chance, immediately firing a shot from dead center past Kenyon goalie Mayo Amorello to make it 3-2.

Kenyon, however, was quick to strike back. After a ground ball pickup by Cameron Longway, the Lords worked the ball to Matteo who passed it off to Heath who scored. A Heath ground ball led to another Kenyon possession soon after and Hill Carter sent the ball home, extending the Kenyon lead. It did not take long for DePauw to strike back, with another Kenyon penalty giving the Tigers an extra-man opportunity, DePauw converted on the chance to narrow the score to 5-3.

The second quarter was lower scoring, with both teams struggling to put points on the board. The Lords continued to pile on the pressure, but Tigers goalie Patrick Lawton had a phenomenal stretch, making four saves to keep Kenyon at bay. However, the Lords broke through in the final three minutes of the quarter, with goals in quick succession by Powell and Pollack sandwiching a DePauw goal. Matteo added another goal near the quarter's close to take the Lords into halftime with a strong 8-4 lead.

Kenyon drew first blood in the second half, when Pollack found the back of the net on what appeared to be an attempted pass. Will Harrigan quickly slotted in another shot for the Lords, further padding the lead to 10-4. Despite an aggressive offense, the Lords experienced a ten-minute scoring drought, stifled by a strong Tigers defensive effort, until a man-up goal by Pollack ended things. At the quarter's close, the Lords found themselves with an 11-5 lead.

Leo Cowie scored the first goal of the fourth quarter to increase the Kenyon lead to seven. Joe Bolea added in a second and Chase MacCartee and Kyle Becker scored one more apiece to give the Lords a 15-5 victory at the final whistle. The Kenyon defense did not allow a goal all quarter and only allowed two total goals after the first quarter, putting on an utterly dominant display.

The Lords were by far the more aggressive team throughout the game, taking a whopping 56 shot attempts to the Tigers' 19. They also picked up 51 ground balls while the Tigers only had 21 and forced six more turnovers. They similarly excelled at face-offs, winning 21 out of 24 of them.

Pollack put on a show for the Lords, scoring a team-high four goals. Powell and Matteo impressed as well, each knocking in two goals and dishing out an assist. Heath led the Lords in assists with three. Defensively, Ian Gobron had seven ground balls while Thomas Nelson added eight. Kern Byrnes was a standout on defense, causing four turnovers. In goal, Amorello had eight saves while allowing a mere five goals to get past him.

The Lords will take the field again on Tuesday, April 12, at home in the Benson Bowl against Wittenberg University in another NCAC showdown. The game starts at 4 p.m.
