Owls kick off season with nine-team Invitational

Box Score GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College women's tennis team got its 2022-23 season underway Saturday and Sunday by hosting eight other teams in the annual Kenyon Invitational. Saturday's matches included singles and doubles play, both inside and out, while Sunday's rainy weather forced play inside with doubles matches only.

Making the most of Saturday for the Owls was senior Catriona MacIntosh, who went 2-0 in her singles matches. She first logged a 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 victory over Otterbein University's Emma Henson and then used another three sets to down Peyton Oda of Denison University by a score of 6-1, 5-7, 10-6.

Breaking even in singles play Saturday with records of 1-1 for Kenyon were Shadia Amado Aguad, Allaire Berl, Eleni Lazaridou, Lalasa Nagireddy and Erika Pontillo.

In doubles play, it was Pontillo and Berl who stood out for Kenyon. That pairing went 3-0 over the weekend. On Saturday, they posted an 8-3 win over Henson and Erin Storrer of Otterbein. On Sunday, they defeated Manuela Van Cotthem and Anika Joshi of Carnegie Mellon University by an 8-5 count and also whipped up an 8-6 victory over The College of Wooster's Otilia Oita and Janaki Jagannathan to complete a perfect 3-0 mark in Invitational play.

Kenyon's only other doubles win came from Eleni Dakos and Nagireddy, who teamed up to also defeat Oita and Jagannathan. They did so by an 8-3 final score.

The Owls have just one more event listed on their fall schedule and that will be the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region Championship, which gets underway September 30 at Washington University in St. Louis.
