Marietta hands Kenyon defeat in season debut

MARIETTA, Ohio -- The new-look Kenyon College volleyball team made its season debut Friday night under the direction of new head coach Emma Olson. The Owls showed sparks of promise, but the host Marietta College Pioneers relied on their experienced crew to chalk up a 3-0 win over Kenyon with set scores of 25-26, 25-22, 25-11.

The Owls got a team-high eight kills from senior Macy Reimbold, who posted an individual hitting percentage of .333. First-year Kathryn McCaffrey added five kills and hit .286, but Kenyon, as a team, ended up posting a .072 hitting percentage.

On the other side of the court, Marietta maintained the lead for the majority of the match. Mia Silva and Maggie Fellers led the attack for the Pioneers, who hit .341 as a team. Silva posted 11 kills, while Fellers rang up a game-high 13 kills without an error.

While Kenyon struggled with its attack in the first and third sets, the second set was a different story. The Owls racked up eight kills with no errors and swung it at .320 pace. In that same middle set, Marietta went ahead 12-6, but Kenyon charged back to bring the score to 15-13. Although the Owls never caught the Pioneers, they pulled within two points on three more occasions.

Kenyon fell behind early in the first set, too, but also rallied to pull within two points at 13-11. Marietta then scored five of the next six points to pull away for the opening set win.

In the third set, Marietta's momentum was too much to overcome and the Owls stalled, falling behind 10-4 and 15-9 before dropping the set by a 14-point margin.

In addition to her eight kills, Reimbold added eight digs. First-year Elizabeth Sonza led the team with 10 digs, while Jac Cousineau served up 10 assists. Paige Milhon and Eras Yager each were credited with four blocks.

The match was part of Marietta's annual River City Classic, a four-team, two day event. The Owls, with their first match behind them, will return to Marietta tomorrow to square off with Washington and Jefferson College at 10 a.m. and then Franciscan University at noon.
