Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Owls fall on the road in rivalry game

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- The Kenyon College women's basketball team got its offense going Saturday, but the host Denison University Big Red connected on 10 three-point baskets and rolled to a 93-69 North Coast Athletic Conference win over the visiting Owls.

Kenyon (6-13, 2-6 NCAC) had a hard time slowing down any part of the Denison offense, which shot 46.3 percent (31-of-67) overall, 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from three-point range, and 70 percent (21-of-30) at the free throw line.

The Owls offense was just as efficient, shooting 44.3 percent (27-of-61) overall, 45.0 percent (9-of-20) from three and 75 percent (6-of-8) at the line. The team's flow, however, was consistently interrupted by 20 turnovers and 30 trips to the free throw line for the Big Red.

Katie Orefice and Claudia Cooke both scored 17 points and led the way for Kenyon. Orefice also had five rebounds, while Cooke grabbed six. Bela Krslovic and Alyssa Gest scored 11 and 10, respectively, while Anissa Hardy chalked up a team- and game-high nine rebounds.

Denison (8-11, 3-5 NCAC) wound up scoring 27 points off Kenyon's 20 turnovers. Led by Gabby Elliot, the Big Red had all five starters reach double-digit scoring outputs. Elliot poured in a game-high 21, while Abigail Westmeyer had 16 and Maddie Goodman had a dozen.

Kenyon got off to a good start, but Denison's long-range shooters turned things around. The Owls jumped out to leads of 9-5 and 12-9, only to be countered by three-pointers from Elliot and Hannah Wynn, who gave Denison an 18-12 edge after one quarter of play.

Four more Denison three-balls found their mark in the second quarter, giving the Big Red a first-half 7-of-15 showing from long range. Kenyon, however, managed to stay in the game and a field goal from Cooke put the Owls just two points back at the halfway mark of the quarter.

Over the last four minutes of the second quarter, Denison went on a 15-3 run to take a 45-33 lead at the break. During the run, Elliot and Molly Fisher canned three-point baskets.

That 12-point margin would be as close as Kenyon would get for the rest of the game. Denison outscored Kenyon 28-20 in the third and 20-16 in the fourth.

Kenyon now has a week-long break and will next face Ohio Wesleyan University on the road Saturday, February 4.
