Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Ohio Wesleyan takes advantage of short-handed Owls

DELAWARE, Ohio -- Playing without its typical post presence, the Kenyon College women's basketball team had to make adjustments Saturday at Ohio Wesleyan University. The host Battling Bishops took advantage of the situation and rolled to a 94-66 conference victory.

Kenyon (6-14, 2-7 NCAC) was without junior Claudia Cooke, the team's leading rebounder and a top scorer, who was out of the lineup due to injury. First-year Anissa Hardy, another post player for the Owls, ran into foul trouble during the game and that cleared the way for the Battling Bishops to dominate down low.

The predicament forced the Owls offense to stretch things out with mid- and long-range jumpers. When the revamped offense got set, it produced. Kenyon shot a season-high 52.3 percent (23-of-44) overall, which included a 42.9 percent showing (9-of-21) on three-pointers.

Getting set, however, was often a problem. The Owls turned the ball over 26 times. The Battling Bishops, who only committed six turnovers themselves, ended up scoring 41 points off the Kenyon miscues.

In the paint, Ohio Wesleyan outscored Kenyon 46-18.

Beyond the arc, Kenyon junior Bela Krslovic went 5-of-9 (55.6 percent) on three-pointers, while Alyssa Gest connected on two of her three attempts. Krslovic finished with 15 points and Gest finished with 14. Senior Katie Orefice wound up leading the team with 20 points on an 8-of-12 shooting performance.

Mikayla Rudolph scored seven for Kenyon and led the team in rebounding with nine. Hardy, who was limited to 13 minutes of playing time because of foul trouble, scored five points and grabbed six rebounds.

On the other side of the court, Ohio Wesleyan (13-8, 8-2 NCAC) had four double-digit scorers and was led by Kasey Schipfer, who poured in a game-high 24. Lauren Denison scored 17, Alyssa Griner tallied 16 and Graci Semptimphelter added 10.

The Battling Bishops lead from start to finish. They began with a 4-0 edge and a three-pointer from Denison increased the lead 10 about seven minutes in. Semptimphelter ended the first quarter with another three-pointer for Ohio Wesleyan, which moved ahead 29-16.

Kenyon cut its deficit to single digits once in the second quarter, but the Battling Bishops maintained a 13-point cushion with a 50-37 halftime lead.

Two free throws from Orefice to start the third quarter trimmed the lead to 11, but Kenyon never got any closer the rest of the way. Ohio Wesleyan's largest lead was 30, just before Gest hit the final field goal of the game.

Next up is another road game for Kenyon, which will make a trip to The College of Wooster on Wednesday for a 6:30 p.m. conference contest. Kenyon defeated Wooster earlier in the season, ringing up a 67-65 decision at home.
