Owls pepper Presidents to prolong winning streak

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College field hockey team took care of business at home against Washington & Jefferson College on Wednesday night. The Owls ousted the Presidents by a score of 4-1, extending Kenyon's winning streak to three straight.

The victory over the new North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) opponent boosts Kenyon's record to 7-6 overall and 4-3 in the NCAC. On the other side, W&J falls to 5-7 overall and 4-4 in league play.

Kenyon came out ready to defend its home field and kept the pressure on the Presidents' side of the field for the entire opening quarter. The Owls outshot W&J 9-0 in the frame and put seven shots on goal, but Anastasia Goadt secured all seven saves to keep Kenyon off the board.

Overall, the Owls outshot the Presidents 22-9, including a 14-4 edge in shots on goal, but it was W&J who got on the board first. The visitors flipped the script and took the second frame's first five shots, including three from Hailey Wachowiak, who found the back of the net in the 26th minute after a W&J penalty corner.

It did not take long for the Owls to get back to their attacking ways, and Maren Lawrence moved the momentum back in Kenyon's favor three minutes later. The first-year's sixth goal of the season tied the game in the 29th minute, with the score coming off an assist by Kiersten Hoffmann.

The Owls took the half's final four shots as they looked to go ahead, but Kenyon had to wait until the second half to break through. The wait was a short one, however, as Lana Stone scored a solo goal in the 33rd minute that put Kenyon ahead for good.

The fourth quarter featured another quick Owls goal after Grace Lane ripped a shot that turned into an assist after Casey Master connected after the rebound. The goal was the first-year's first this season, putting Kenyon up 3-1 in the 49th minute. Lane added another assist six minutes later when she dished out a dime on Stone's second goal. The score marked Stone's first career multi-goal game, and the assist marked Lane's first career multi-assist outing.

W&J took the game's final three shots, but Megan Lydon and the Owls defense kept the Presidents off the board to clinch the 4-1 win.

The victory was a great way to start the Owls' three-game homestand, and Kenyon will be looking for a fourth straight win when they welcome Earlham College (2-10, 1-6 NCAC) to Gambier at noon on Saturday, October 14. After facing the Quakers, the Owls will celebrate their Senior Day on Sunday, October 15, when they host Concordia University (Wis.) (2-9) at 11 a.m.
