Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Master nets game-winner for Owls

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Kenyon College field hockey team (10-6) traveled to Pennsylvania Saturday morning for the penultimate North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) regular season matchup against the Allegheny College Gators (2-7).

In the end, first-year Casey Master scored the game-winning goal for the Owls in the fourth quarter to send Kenyon home a winner 2-1 for the team's sixth win in a row, its longest streak of the season.

The game started relatively slow, as neither team could score in the first quarter, but Kenyon had a decided advantage in shots and corner opportunities. Shots from Maren Lawrence, Ella Haskins, and Lucy Scott tested Gators goalkeeper Meredythe Baird early, but the score remained 0-0 at the end of one.

It didn't take long into the second for the Owls to strike, as Raigan Hutter expertly navigated the Gators' defense and buried a nice shot to give the team a 1-0 lead just two and a half minutes into the second quarter. The unassisted goal was the junior's first goal of the season, moving her to sixth on the team in points adding to her three assists.

The rest of the half saw great Owls chances from Lawrence, Haskins, and Grace Lane, but the Owls were unable to add to the lead, despite holding its opponent scoreless in the first half for the seventh time this season. In the half, Kenyon outshot Allegheny 11-4 and had a 3-2 corner advantage. Megan Lydon made three saves and Baird made seven for the Gators.

In the second, Allegheny quickly evened the score, after Ella O'Connor fielded a pass from Bella Cowen to score her first goal of the season just six minutes into the second half. This happened to be the only shot on goal for the Gators in the quarter, as Kenyon responded with an 11-0 shot stretch, all stopped by the Gators' defense.

The Owls were bound to break through to the back of the net again, and 45 seconds into the fourth, the team did just that. Master tapped in a great pass from Lane for her second goal of the season and first game-winning goal in her young collegiate career.

Despite a late effort by the Gators, Lydon's two huge saves down the stretch secured the 2-1 win for the Owls. Kenyon finished the game outshooting the Gators 28-9, with a 16-6 on-goal advantage. Lydon finished the game with five saves, and Baird stopped 14 Owls shots.

The win moves the Owls to 10-6 overall, 6-3 in conference play, and keeps the Kenyon alive for one of the four spots available for the NCAC Tournament. The Owls are back in action for the final regular season game of 2023 on Saturday, October 28th at 12:00 p.m. to play the Wittenberg University Tigers, another team that is in the hunt for the NCAC Tournament, sitting at sixth in the conference.
