Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Loss to Tigers doesn’t damage Owls’ postseason plans

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Kenyon College junior Grace Lane fired in two more goals Saturday, but they weren't enough to lift the Owls field hockey team over the visiting Wittenberg University Tigers, who notched a goal in each of the first three quarters to claim a 3-2 victory.

The final result moved both teams' overall records to 10-7. Within North Coast Athletic Conference play, however, the Owls slid to 6-4, while the Tigers improved to 5-5. That puts Kenyon in a tie for fourth place with The College of Wooster and puts Wittenberg in sole possession of sixth place.

The result also marked the end of the regular season, setting the stage for postseason play. Due to their regular-season win against Wooster, the Owls own the tie-breaker and gain the No. 4 seed in the four-team conference tournament, which gets underway Wednesday. Kenyon will head to No. 1-seeded Ohio Wesleyan University for the tournament semifinal game.

Action on the field Saturday started rapidly, with Lane tallying the game's first goal just 65 seconds from the start. The play evolved when Maren Lawrence stole the ball from a Wittenberg defender. She broke loose down the right side and whipped a pass to Lane, who made the most of a one-on-one with the Wittenberg goalkeeper.

The early goal didn't phase the Tigers, though. They ended up netting the equalizer later in the first quarter off a shot from Emmy Kuijten. That was one of nine first-quarter shots for Wittenberg, which out-shot Kenyon 30-10 for the game.

The Tigers took the lead on Maddy Krasnow's goal in the second quarter and then extended the lead with Lucy Ripepi's goal in the third quarter.

Facing a two-goal deficit in the fourth quarter, Kenyon cranked up its urgency. A little more than two minutes into the final frame, Lane struck again. This time, playing off a penalty corner inserted by Hannah Paprotna, she ripped a shot that found its target from the top of the circle.

The two goals for Lane gave her 15 on the season. That total is tied for the seventh-best single-season mark in program history. Additionally, those 15 goals, plus her six assists, gave Lane 36 points on the season. That total is tied for the fourth-best single-season mark in program history.

With 30 shots fired off Wittenberg sticks, Kenyon goalkeeper Megan Lydon was busy and she came through for the Owls, making a season-high 17 saves.
