Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Owls offense soars past Scots

GAMBIER, Ohio – The first thirty minutes were all that was needed for the Kenyon College field hockey team (5-6) to top The College of Wooster Fighting Scots (4-3) on Tuesday evening at Benson Bowl, winning 3-1 in the conference bout.

The win snaps the Owls' three-game losing streak while extending the its win-streak against Wooster to six straight games.

After being shutout in the team's last three contests, Kenyon's offense wasted no time in finding the back of the net, scoring just 5:39 into the game. After fielding the penalty corner, Casey Master tapped a pass across the circle to Grace Lane, who sent a ball towards the Scots net which found a crashing Hannah Paprotna on the back door to touch it in for her second goal of the season and send the Owls up 1-0.

Less than a minute later, Wooster responded with a goal of its own, as an errant pass in the Owls defensive zone found the stick of a pressing Joey Beckerman, who ran past the Kenyon defense and snuck the ball in the back of the net, evening the score at 1-1.

In the second, the Owls again started fast, breaking the tie three minutes into the quarter, as Kiersten Hoffmann dished the ball to Lane after another penalty corner. Lane fielded the pass, made a move past two Wooster defenders, and sent a rocket of a shot to the low far-side corner through traffic, giving the Owls a 2-1 lead.

The Owls scored again with just eleven seconds in the half, as Master sent a long clear to the top of the circle, where Ella Haskins was able to field the ball, despite being surrounded by three Wooster defenders. Haskins evaded traffic, beat the goalkeeper and put Kenyon up 3-1 headed into halftime.

The goals by Paptrotna, Lane, and Haskins propelled Kenyon to it's second highest-scoring half of the 2023 season, with the first coming by way of two four-goal halves against Ferrum College in September.

The second half slowed down offensively for both teams, but the Owls defense led by Liz Cramer, Lauryn Rauschenberger, and Lucy Scott in the middle assured that no more Wooster goals got past Lydon.

Offensively, good chances from Lane in the third and early fourth and Maren Lawrence in the closing stages of the contest nearly extended the Owls lead, but the Scots defense would not break, leaving the score at 3-1 for an Owls win.

For the game, the Owls outshot the Scots 14-5 and had an 8-0 advantage in penalty corners. Lydon ended the game with three saves and Wooster goalkeeper Cate Barkdoll matched with three of her own.

The win moves the Owls to 5-6 on the year and 2-3 in NCAC action, which will continue on Saturday at 11:00 am as the team travels to Lexington, Kentucky to face the Transylvania University Pioneers (3-6).
