LEXINGTON, Ky.-- On Saturday morning, the Kenyon College field hockey team orchestrated its second straight win with a 3-1 road victory at Transylvania University. The Owls battled back from a 1-0 deficit to push past the Pioneers in Kenyon's penultimate road game this season.
With the victory, Kenyon climbed back to a .500 record at 6-6 overall and 3-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC). Transylvania falls to 3-9 overall and is still looking for its first NCAC victory in five tries in the program's first season as a conference affiliate member.Â
Kenyon has had Transy's number in the all-time series between the teams, as the College has now won 15 straight matchups and 17 of 18 total meetings. The Owls' 17-1 record and .944 winning percentage against the Pioneers is the program's best against any school Kenyon has played more than seven times. Most recently, in 2021, Kenyon toppled Transy 5-0 at home in Gambier.
Despite the historic dominance against Transy, the Owls had to respond after the Pioneers took the first punch. The home team scored an early goal to go ahead 1-0 just 180 seconds into the match.
Kenyon, however, bounced back in a big way at the early goal, which was the only shot the Owls conceded over the remaining 57 minutes. Grace Lane continued to lead the Owls' offense by earning the equalizer in the eighth minute. The goal was Lane's eighth this season, the third-best mark in the conference.
The Owls outshot the Pioneers 4-0 in the second frame, but the game remained knotted up at the half. That changed quickly when Abby Golub scored in the 35th minute, putting Kenyon up for good. The goal, and her two shots on goal, marked the first this season for the first-year.
The youth movement continued in the final frame when Maren Lawrence, another first-year, added an insurance goal in the 56th minute. Lawrence's fifth goal this year, tied for second on the Owls, provided the final 3-1 winning margin.
Overall, Kenyon outshot Transy 14-1, including a 10-1 edge in shots on goal. The Owls also compiled a 13-3 advantage in penalty corners as the offense applied the pressure.Â
Kenyon will be looking for a third straight win when it returns home to kick off a three-game homestand. The Owls face another NCAC affiliate, Washington & Jefferson College (4-6, 3-3 NCAC), at 4 p.m. in Gambier on Wednesday, October 11.
