Owls win second set, fall in four to Yellow Jackets

DEFIANCE, Ohio -- The Kenyon College volleyball team (3-13) traveled to Northwest Ohio on Wednesday night to take on the Defiance College Yellow Jackets (3-12). In a very close contest, Kenyon fell three sets to one, continuing the quest to capture the program's first win against the Yellow Jackets.

In the first, Defiance jumped out to an early lead, gaining a 14-4 lead to start the match. The Owls were not deterred, and fired off an 11-2 run to cut the Yellow Jacket lead to one. After the 15-16 point, Defiance was able to close out the set off of a 9-5 run and captured the set 25-20.

Aura Barinas led the Owls in the first with six kills, hitting at an impressive .833. Maggie Wolf dished out seven assists, and Bryn Carrigan and Lindsey Abramson recorded one block apiece.

Coming off a close first set, the Owls knew they had to respond. After an early 5-1 Defiance lead, Kenyon  jumped out to its first lead of the set and match, going ahead 14-10, with great points from Abramson and Sophia Menke. The Owls were able to fend off a late Yellow Jackets retaliation and went on a strong run to end the set 25-16, evening the match at one set.

In the second, Kenyon capitalized on its 15-7 kill advantage and outhit Defiance 0.520 to 0.154. Wolf led the Owls in the winning set with eleven assists.

The third set was tightly contested, as both teams felt how crucial gaining an advantage was. A total of five lead changes and eight ties ensued, and the Owls found themselves two points behind in the late stages of the set. Down 18-20, head coach Sharon Adams called a timeout to try and regroup. Despite going up briefly after the break, the Yellow Jackets 5-3 run ended the set 25-21, and put Defiance up 2-1.

Despite the loss, the Owls again had the kill advantage, this time 13-11 while outhitting the Yellow Jackets 0.267 to 0.188.

The final set also was back and forth to start, but three 3-0 runs by the Yellow Jackets propelled the team to a late 15-19 lead. After a Kenyon timeout, Defiance ended the match on a 6-1 run and won the set 25-16.

Menke led the Owls with eleven kills and 13.5 points while hitting at a .588 clip. She added to her performance with a team-high two service aces. Maggie Wolf dished out a game-high 35 assists, and Lauren Blakemore led the team with 12 digs.

The loss drops Kenyon's season-long record to 3-13. The Owls look to bounce back at home on Saturday at 11:00 am to face the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops for its third NCAC bout of the season.
