Owls fall in close contest with OWU

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College volleyball team wouldn't be pushed around Saturday by conference-leading Ohio Wesleyan University. The host Owls gave the Battling Bishops a good run before falling in three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-22, 25-23.

The win moved Ohio Wesleyan to 15-3 overall and kept the Battling Bishops atop the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) standings with a 3-0 mark. Kenyon's loss dropped the Owls to 3-14 overall and 0-3 in NCAC play.

Ohio Wesleyan ran out to an early 7-3 lead in the first set, but a kill from Kenyon senior Lindsey Abramson and two Ohio Wesleyan errors knocked the Owls deficit down to one, at 13-12. Later, a kill from Sophie Menke tied things up at 15-15.

Throughout the first set, there were four tied scores and eight occasions in which Kenyon trailed by just one point. Ohio Wesleyan, however, took advantage of Kenyon errors and closed out the set on a 8-1 run.

The second set was similar, but even more closely contested. The set featured a dozen one-point deficits for Kenyon and eight tied scores. Despite things being so close, the Owls were never able to gain a lead in the first two sets.

The Battling Bishops created some breathing room with a 7-2 run in the middle of that second set. That turned a tie game into a 19-14 Ohio Wesleyan advantage. Kenyon came back with kills from Becca Gwynne and Olivia Gumz, but the Battling Bishops answered, taking a 24-19 lead and then holding off a late Kenyon charge to win the set by three points.

Without holding a lead to this point, the Owls came out in the third set and charged ahead by scores of 4-1 and 7-4. A Kenyon service error followed by two Ohio Wesleyan aces tied things up once again, but the Owls rattled off four straight to forge ahead 11-7.

Kenyon maintained that cushion for a while, but with the Owls in front 20-17, the Battling Bishops made their move, scoring five straight. Down the stretch, the teams tied at 22 and 23. Ohio Wesleyan then squeaked out the win with a kill followed by a Kenyon error.

Peters led all players with 12 kills and four aces for Ohio Wesleyan. Abramson led Kenyon with seven kills. Aura Barinas had six kills, while Gwynne chalked up five kills and a match-high five blocks. Meanwhile, Maggie Wolf contributed match-highs of 23 assists and 16 digs to the Kenyon totals.

The Owls, who have played just three matches at home to this point, turn to the road once again. They'll next travel to Otterbein University for a Saturday non-conference tri-match with Heidelberg University and the host Cardinals.
