Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Owls start fast, but fade against No. 1 Captains

MARIETTA, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's basketball team had the unenviable task of taking on the nation's No.1-ranked team Friday night in the first round of the Marietta College Shrine Tournament. The Owls, however, held their own before the Christopher Newport University Captains went on to log a 94-68 victory.

Christopher Newport (1-1) took the early lead on a couple of three-pointers, but Kenyon tied things up at 9-9 and took control from there. Over the next six minutes of play, the Owls outscored the Captains 19-14 to claim a 27-23 advantage. During that run, the Owls went 4-of-5 from beyond the three-point arc with four different players connecting on three-balls.

That momentum was quickly flipped, however, as the Captains went on an 18-0 tear over the next five minutes, a span in which Kenyon missed eight straight shots. That left the Captains with a 41-27 lead with a little more than four minutes left in the half.

Christopher Newport did not let up. The Captains ended up shooting 52.8 percent in the half and got to the break with a 53-38 lead.

After trailing for a decent portion of the first half, Christopher Newport looked to its bench to keep things going. For the game, the Captain's five starters combined for 31 points, while the bench put up 63 points, compared to 35 for Kenyon's bench.

In the scoring department, Christopher Newport's Trey Barber led all players with 20 points. Toa Hollenbeck scored 14 and Jahn Hines dumped in 11. All three of those players came off the bench.

Kenyon (0-2) got a team-high 13 points from Gefen Bar-Cohen. He was one of 13 players who scored at least one point for the Owls. Juan Sergio Matabuena had eight, while Lucas Friedman, Murathan Kocaman and Dylan Fuerst each scored seven.

Drew Valentino scored just six for Kenyon, but his game-high 13 rebounds were a good reason the Owls outscored the Captains, 17-6, in second-chance points.

Following halftime, Christopher remained in control. The Captains scored the first six points of the second half to open a 21-point advantage. For the remainder of the game, Kenyon never got closer than 13.

To their credit, the Owls did show vast improvement at the free throw line. After shooting 36.4 percent (8-of-22) in a season-opening loss to Capital University, they shot 87.0 percent (20-of-23) against Christopher Newport.

Kenyon will remain in Marietta and finish off the two-day tournament tomorrow with a 5 p.m. contest against Washington and Jefferson College.
