Polar Bears ice Owls in Music City opener

GALLATIN, Tenn. – Ball security proved pivotal tonight as the Kenyon College Owls women's basketball team squared off against the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in Gallatin, Tennessee for the first game of the Music City Classic hosted by Volunteer State College.

The Polar Bears (9-1) caused 23 turnovers leading to 30 points on the other end, and the Owls' offense could not beat the heat, falling 69-38.

Mikayla Rudolph was the standout offensively for Kenyon, leading the team with 13 points shooting 4-of-11 from the field and a career-high 5-of-6 from the line while adding four rebounds and an assist. Despite the high-scoring night from Rudolph, her stat line did not get going until the second quarter.

In the first quarter, the Owls (2-9) seemed to get off to a slow start after not competing for two weeks, and the Polar Bears, riding a five-game win streak, were able to pounce on the Kenyon offense, causing nine first-quarter turnovers leading to 13 points.

Anissa Hardy and Grace Murphy found the basket early on, and Claudia Cooke hit two layups as the Owls faced an 18-8 deficit after one.

As the second quarter began, the Owls' presence on both sides of the ball shifted for the better. Kenyon opened the quarter with a great stop on defense and Rudolph hit a nice shot after fighting for an offensive rebound on the other end. From that point, the Owls matched the Polar Bears point for point as Alyssa Gest got involved at the free throw line, and Raine Hammel hit two jumpers as the second quarter ended with the Owls still trailing 32-21.

After halftime, Rudolph again tried to provide a spark to fire up the Owls offense after nailing an elbow jumper from just inside three-point land, but Bowdoin snuffed out those ambitions, going on a 14-2 run to open the third quarter. Rudolph would add two free throws and Cooke would sink a jumper, but the Polar Bears kept forcing turnovers and hitting shots, building a 54-27 lead at the end of three.

Gest started out the fourth with baskets as the Owls tried to mount a comeback, and Rudolph added six in the quarter, but foul trouble and turnovers kept Kenyon at a distance, eventually falling 69-38.

As a team, the Owls shot 27 percent from the field and 77 percent from the charity stripe, but went 0-of-12 from downtown. Rudolph led the squad with 13 points, while Cooke had seven while leading the team with nine rebounds. Gest and Hardy each had six points, Raine had four and Murphy chipped in two.

Kenyon is back in action tomorrow from Volunteer State College's Pickle Field House to take on the Johns Hopkins University Blue Jays at 5:00 PM CST.
