Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Two Owls thrive, but No. 23 Blue Jays take the win

GALLATIN, Tenn. -- Wrapping up its two-game set in the Music City Classic on Saturday, the Kenyon College women's basketball team nearly racked up a pair of double-doubles in a neutral-site game against Johns Hopkins University. The individual showings, however, fell short of the team goal, as the Blue Jays cruised to a 82-38 victory.

Kenyon senior Claudia Cooke missed a double-double by one rebound, as she ended the contest with 10 points and nine boards. Sophomore Anissa Hardy, who came off the bench, led the Owls with a dozen rebounds, but came up shy of a double-double with nine points.

The loss dropped Kenyon's record to 2-10, while Johns Hopkins, who came into the game as the No. 23-ranked NCAA Division III squad, improved to 10-1 with the victory.

Johns Hopkins took control right away. With Greta Miller pumping in six of the team's first 11 points, the Blue Jays moved ahead 11-4. The team sank five free throws over the last three minutes of the first quarter and claimed a 16-6 lead over Kenyon, which struggled through a 2-of-11 shooting performance over those opening 10 minutes.

The Owls got back on track in the second quarter, shooting 5-of-9 with Alyssa Gest scoring six points on dribble drives. Hardy, who had two points and three rebounds in the first quarter, got to the break with six points, six rebounds, a couple of blocks and a steal.

Johns Hopkins shook off Kenyon's improved efforts and, despite not shooting well, made it to intermission with a commanding 37-20 advantage. Both Miller and Macie Feldman had 10 points for the Blue Jays at that point.

When play resumed in the third quarter, Johns Hopkins ended any Kenyon hopes of a comeback. The Blue Jays scored the first six points of the second half and cracked open a 23-point lead, one that would expand to 28 points two different times, including after an Elisabeth Peebles' three-pointer that ended the third quarter.

Kenyon never got closer than 28 the rest of the way and the final margin of 44 was the biggest gap.

Feldman led all scorers with 15, while Miller finished with 14. Jadyn Murray tossed in 11 and Peebles rounded out the Blue Jays' individual double-digit scoring totals with 10.

Gest ended with 10 points for Kenyon and Mikayla Rudolph added seven, including the team's lone three-point conversion in 13 attempts.

Although the Owls did not shoot well from distance, they did put on a 17-of-21 showing (81.0 percent) at the free throw line.
