Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Owls overcome slow start to defeat Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio -- After hitting just three field goals in the first quarter, the Kenyon College women's basketball team found itself in an early hole Wednesday night. The Owls, however, found a way to work out of it and rallied to ring up a 64-48 win at The College of Wooster.

The victory wrapped up a regular-season sweep of the Fighting Scots for the Owls, who improved to 7-14 overall and 3-7 within North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play. Wooster, on the other hand, fell to 1-21 overall and 0-11 in NCAC action.

The start of the game wasn't exactly what the Owls had in mind. The team missed its first four shots and committed a turnover, as Wooster jumped ahead 6-0. The Scots then went ahead by as many as nine points, before Kenyon's Katie Orefice and Mikayla Rudolph went on a surge that cut the lead down to four by the end of the first quarter.

In the second stanza, Wooster maintained the lead and moved ahead by eight points. Kenyon then responded with an eight-point run to tie the game at 23-23 with 4:56 showing on the clock. The Kenyon run was fueled by a layup from Anissa Hardy and back-to-back three-pointers from Rudolph and Bela Krslovic.

As the team's approached the break, a layup from Orefice, who scored 11 points in the first half, and a pair of free throws from Alyssa Gest gave Kenyon a 31-28 advantage at intermission.

Krsolvic increased the lead to five with a pair of free throws and, one minute later, Rudolph dropped in another three-ball for a seven-point Kenyon advantage. Rudolph added another bucket later in the third quarter and Grace Murphy hit one more Kenyon three-pointer to give the Owls' their largest lead at 47-31 with a little less than two minutes left in the third.

From that point, Wooster never got closer than nine points the rest of the way and Kenyon's lead ballooned to as many as 18 points in the fourth quarter.

Rudolph wound up draining 3-of-8 three-point attempts to chalk up a season-high 15 points. She also contributed seven rebounds and a season-high three steals. When she wasn't punishing the Fighting Scots, Orefice did. The senior guard racked up a game-high 18 points and put together her fourth double-double of the season after grabbing 11 rebounds.

Hardy, a Kenyon first-year, also registered a double-double. She scored 11 points and latched on to a game-high and season-high 14 rebounds. Krslovic tossed in ten points and rounded out the Owls' double-digit scorers.

Mia Walker and Shalen Guilliams led Wooster with 14 points apiece.

The Owls, who made 26 turnovers in their last game, dropped that total down to 14 against Wooster.

The Owls now have four games left in the regular season and the next one will be Saturday at home against the conference-leading Tigers of Wittenberg University. Tipoff at Tomsich Arena is set for 1 p.m.
