Kenyon women net pair of Saturday wins

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Kenyon College women's tennis team put together a near-perfect day Saturday at the USTA National Campus. The No. 30-ranked Owls started things off with a 9-0 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan University and then capped things off with an 8-1 win over Hardin-Simmons University.

Against North Carolina Wesleyan, the Owls faced a little bit of a challenge in doubles. At No. 1 Eleni Lazaridou and Eleni Dakos held on for a 8-7 (7-3) win, while at No. 3, Lalasa Nagireddy and Natalie Connelly pulled out an 8-6 victory.

That was about all the fight the Battling Bishops had in them. When the script flipped to singles play, the Owls completely dominated, winning all six matches in straight sets and not letting a North Carolina Wesleyan opponent earn more than three games in a set.

At No. 1, Lazaridou whipped through a 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Kristal Dule. At. No. 2, Allaire Berl was well ahead before taking the match by opponent retirement. And at No. 3, Dakos crafted a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Cristina Mendoza Romero.

In the back half of the Kenyon singles lineup, Catriona Macintosh won at No. 4, Nagireddy cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5, and Connelly rounded out the sweep, taking the No. 6 match.

Not much changed in the second match against Hardin-Simmons, although the Owls got off to a better start, chalking up 8-0 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.

Singles play was a little tighter, but Kenyon took five of the six matches in straight sets. Lazaridou kicked things off at No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph and Berl followed by taking the No. 2 bout 6-4, 6-2. Dakos and MacIntosh again filled the No. 3 and No. 4 spots and, again, came away with convincing wins.

Hardin-Simmons got its lone team point at No. 5, but Irina Beshentseva stepped in at No. 6 for Kenyon and recorded a 6-1, 6-4 win.

Throughout the day, Lazaridou, Berl, and Dakos posted perfect 4-0 records. Their efforts helped the Owls improve their team record to 6-2.

Kenyon has a few days off before playing another twinbill Wednesday at the National Campus. The Owls will take on No. 4-ranked Wesleyan University at 11 a.m. and then Millsaps College at 6 p.m.
