Game Recap: Softball |

Knights take two from Owls

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - On the final day of their spring-break softball schedule, the Kenyon College Owls dropped a pair of make-up games to the Knights of Arcadia University, who whipped up a 9-0 win in game one and then repeated the outcome in game two.

The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played Monday, March 13, but rain and lightning didn't allow the teams to make it through one complete inning.

Before things resumed, the Knights were already working with a 3-0 lead. On Monday, Arcadia capitalized on a Kenyon error and scored three runs in the top of the first. That carried over to Wednesday, and so did the momentum.

The Knights scored one more in the third on a home run, two more in the fourth on another home run and then got one more homer that sparked a three-run sixth inning, ending the game via run-rule.

Both Megan Klose and Taylor Sommer had a two-run homer and a solo shot, accounting for six of the nine Arcadia runs. Meanwhile, Kenyon could not match that firepower. The Owl bats were silenced by Juliana Presto, who struck out 11 and allowed just two singles, one to Nicole Archambeau and one to Jesse Leener.

While Presto picked up the win, Kenyon's Jillian Messinger threw all six innings and suffered the loss. She struck out four and gave up nine hits. Three of the nine runs that were scored off Messinger were unearned.

Game two was similar, although one inning shorter. Klose smashed a three-run homer in the first and then tacked on a two-run bomb in the second. That propelled the Knights to score all nine of their runs in the first two innings and, later, to finalize the game in five.

Paige Nolan earned the pitching win for Arcadia. She went four innings and didn't allow a hit. Caity Hinton came on in the fifth inning and nearly preserved the no-hitter, but Kenyon senior Samantha Goldenson ripped a two-out liner to third base to account for the Owls' only hit of the contest. The single was the first collegiate hit for Goldenson, who now has 12 career at-bats.

Sofia Zayas was Kenyon's starting pitcher. She, however, couldn't make it out of the second inning. Messinger and Amanda Harris came on in relief to close out the game.

In the two-game set, the one-woman wrecking crew named Klose finished 5-for-6 with three home runs, six RBI, and four runs scored for the Knights.

The Owls head back north with a 1-15 record, while Arcadia moved to 5-5 and has two more games left in the Sunshine State.
