Owls fall in close contests with Blue Streaks

CLEVELAND -- Finally back in action after inclement weather claimed their last two softball doubleheaders, the Kenyon College Owls kept things close with John Carroll University on Sunday. The Blue Streaks, however, generated early leads and held on for the doubleheader sweep, winning game one 3-2 and game two 6-3.

In game one, John Carroll jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning of play. To their credit, the Owls didn't give up anything else the rest of the way. The three runs, however, were exactly what the Blue Streaks needed to secure the win.

With sophomore Amanda Harris pitching for Kenyon, the Blue Streaks capitalized on a pair of first-inning walks, as well as three stolen bases. Both runners who drew walks, also stole bases and both came around to score. They were the only two walks of the game for Harris, who went six innings, gave up just five hits and struck out three.

John Carroll's Alyssia Carmichael singled home the first run of the game and then later came around to score on a double steal. Deeper into the inning, Gabby Hougan singled home Kaylyn Odelli for the Blue Streaks' third and final run of the game.

Kenyon's offense got one run back in the top of the second inning, when Maeve McLaughlin singled, moved to second on a ground out and then moved to third on a wild pitch. Arianna Jalomo then brought McLaughlin home with an RBI groundout.

One more Kenyon run scored in the top of the fifth. Sophia Lynch kicked off that inning with a single. She moved up two bases on consecutive groundouts and then scored on a single from Nicole Archambeau.

In game two, with first-year Allison McCutchen taking the ball for Kenyon, John Carroll scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning. In the top of the third, Kenyon junior Maddie Friday sent a solo shot over the centerfield wall to tie things up. It was her second homer of the season and the third of her career.

The John Carroll offense then used some Kenyon miscues to score twice in the bottom of the third. An error, a hit-by-pitch, and a passed ball paved the way for two unearned runs.

With a 3-1 advantage in the fifth inning, John Carroll doubled its output with three more in the bottom of the frame. A Kenyon error allowed one more unearned run and a single from Lexie Genovese scored two more for the Blue Streaks.

Kenyon charged back in the top of the sixth with a double from Madison Buckwalter, a John Carroll error, and a single from Jalomo. Buckwalter scored on the error and Jalomo wound up scoring on a fielder's choice. That, however, would be it for the Owls offense, as they were stopped three runs short in the seventh inning.

Kenyon, which produced eight hits in each game of the non-conference doubleheader, got two-game totals of three hits from Lynch, Jesse Leener and Natalya Delsante. McLaughlin and Buckwalter both ended up with a pair of hits.
