OBERLIN, Ohio -- The Kenyon College softball team got a fantastic game-two pitching performance from first-year Allison McCutchen, however, the Oberlin College arms were a bit better and they led the host Yeowomen to a conference doubleheader sweep of the Owls on Monday.
Oberlin, which moved to 6-12 overall and 2-2 in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play, won game one 7-1 and then took game two by a 1-0 final. The losses dropped Kenyon to 1-19 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
McCutchen pitched all six innings of game two and yielded just one earned run on three hits and a walk. She struck out one. Meanwhile, her counterpart, Katie Austin, threw all seven innings for Oberlin and held Kenyon batters to just two hits. She walked two and struck out six to earn the win.
Oberlin scored the game's only run in the first inning. Maria Chutko led off the game with a double to the right-centerfield gap. She moved to third on a groundout and then scored on a sacrifice fly struck by Aliana Di Dio.
Kenyon's offense amounted to a first-inning single from Maddie Friday and a second-inning single from Arianna Jalomo.
In the first game of the twinbill, the Owls had a hard time solving Oberlin pitcher Hailey Alspach, who tossed a complete game six-hitter while fanning five Kenyon batters.
Friday had the most success against Alspach, as she went 2-for-3 with a double in the second inning and a solo home run in the seventh, accounting for the lone Kenyon run. The homer was Friday's third of the season.
Sophomore Sophia Lynch also had two hits for Kenyon in that first game. She singled in both the third and seventh innings.Â
Kenyon threatened to score in the second, but Friday was stranded on third after hitting her double earlier in the inning. In the fourth, the Owls loaded the bases on a single and a pair of Oberlin errors, but a two-out shot to the Oberlin third baseman ended the threat.
Oberlin scored three runs in the second inning off Kenyon starting pitcher
Sofia Zayas. The Yeowomen added single runs in the third and sixth inning, and, in between those two, put together a two-run fifth inning. Zayas took the loss, allowing five earned runs on eight hits and two Kenyon errors.
The Owls will regroup and look forward to their home opener on Saturday against DePauw University. Game one of that conference doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. start.Â
