Owls open season with a couple of losses

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The new-look Kenyon College Owls softball team opened its season Sunday with a pair of games at the Fortune Road Athletics Complex. The young club wound up on the short end of an 8-1 decision against the United States Coast Guard Academy and a 7-4 final against Catholic University of America.

Throughout the two losses, junior Maddie Friday did her best to keep the Owls in both contests. On the day, she was 4-for-7 at the plate (.571 average), with a home run and two runs scored. First-year Madison Buckwalter held her own, going a combined 3-for-6 (.500) with a home run and two RBI. While those two accounted for seven hits, the rest of the Kenyon offense managed just six.

Friday homed in the first inning of game one against the Coast Guard, but that was the beginning and the end of the scoring for the Owls, who managed just five hits off Coast Guard starting pitcher Isabelle Shroyer. Shroyer went the distance, walked just one and struck out 10.

The Bears got to Kenyon starting pitcher Amanda Harris for two runs within the first two innings. Jillian Messinger pitched four innings of relief and yielded four runs. The Bears scored two in the second, one in the third and fifth innings, and then two more runs in each the sixth and seventh innings. Due to three Kenyon errors, only half of Coast Guard's eight runs were earned.

Things were a little closer for Kenyon in its second game against Catholic. That contest amounted to two big innings. In the top of the fourth inning, Kenyon scored three, but in the bottom of the fourth, Catholic scored five. Kenyon then tacked on one more run in the top of the sixth, but Catholic answered with two.

Kenyon's three-run fourth inning included a Maeve McLaughlin double that scored Allison McCutchen. Buckwalter then homered to straight-away center to ring up two more runs.

In the sixth, Kenyon's other run developed after a single from Friday, who later advanced to second on a ground out. McLaughlin then singled up the middle and Friday came around to score. At that point, the Owls were within one run at 5-4, but that would be as close as they would get.

Aubrynn Arcement, who came on in relief for the Cardinals, earned the win by pitching a little more than three innings and allowing just one run.

For Kenyon, starter Sofia Zayas took the loss in her collegiate debut. She pitched nearly four innings and gave up five runs, three earned, on five hits and two walks.

The Owls will look to turn things around tomorrow with games against Misericordia University and York College.
