Game Recap: Softball |

Owls defense improves, but offense stalls

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- On day two of its schedule of spring break games, the Kenyon College softball team's defense and pitching improved, however, its offense was stagnant in a pair of shutout losses Monday. The Owls dropped the opener, 7-0, to Misericordia University and then fell, 1-0, to York College.

A day after committing six errors and yielding 15 runs in a doubleheader, the Owls made just one error while allowing eight runs in Monday's twinbill.

Allison McCutchen earned the pitching start for Kenyon in game one and was cruising along until the third inning, when she gave up a solo home run to leadoff hitter Gianna Russo. Then, in the fourth inning, Misericodia loaded the bases after two singles and an error. It was the only miscue Kenyon made all day and it wound up leading to three more runs. Alexa McHugh, Misericordia's pitcher, doubled to clear the bases, giving the Cougars a 4-0 advantage.

Three more Misericordia (3-0) runs were plated in the fifth inning. A double from
Gianna Foreman scored one and that was followed by a two-run homer from Emma Griffin.

When McHugh had the ball in her hands, she struck out eight Kenyon batters and allowed just one hit in five innings of work to earn the win. Kenyon had only three hits in the game and they were singles from Maddie Friday, Maeve McLaughlin, and Nicole Archambeau.

In the second game against York, Kenyon had just three singles again. Those three came from Natalya Delsante, Arianna Jalomo, and one more from Archambeau.

Despite the lack of offense, the Owls were in the game until the very end. That was due to solid defense and the pitching of first-year Sofia Zayas. She wasn't overpowering, but Zayas gave up just one run on six hits in six innings of work. She did not record a walk or a strikeout.

The game was decided in the bottom of the sixth inning. That's when York shortstop Alyssa Harhigh was hit by a pitch. Then, with Harhigh running, catcher Daphney Adams doubled to the wall in center field, giving Harhigh enough time to round the bases and score the winning run.

In Kenyon's final at-bat in the top of the seventh, McLaughlin tagged a pitch from York starter Amanda Criss. The ball carried to the centerfield wall, but York's Taylor Coon was able to corrall it. Two more pop-outs followed and Criss, who struck out four, claimed the shutout win for York (2-0).

Kenyon (0-4) will shoot for its first win of the season on Tuesday when it faces Illinois College at 9 a.m. and then Marian University, around 11:30 a.m.
