Game Recap: Softball |

Owls offense arrives

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Tuesday, the Kenyon College softball team generated the offensive surge it had been waiting for during the first few days of its spring break schedule. After falling 10-2 in the day's first game against Illinois College, the Owls erupted for a dozen hits in a 10-5 victory in the day's second game against Marian University.

The split put Kenyon's record at 1-5 as it heads toward Wednesday, an off day. The Owls' next games will be Thursday against Husson University and University of Rochester.

The start of Tuesday's doubleheader looked promising, as Nicole Archambeau belted a double in the opening inning against Illinois. Two batters later, Maeve McLaughlin singled Archambeau home for a 1-0 Owls' edge.

In the second inning, Illinois got to Kenyon starting pitcher Allison McCutchen for three runs. The Owls offense, however, got one of those runs back in the next frame to pull within one. With two outs, McLaughlin singled. Arianna Jalomo then sent a shot to center that the Illinois center fielder bobbled and then dropped, allowing McLaughlin to round the bases and score.

Despite the good start at the plate, things fizzled the rest of the way in game one for Kenyon, which was retired in order over the last three innings.

Illinois did not let up and got to the point where the eight-run rule was put in play during the bottom of the sixth inning. The big blow for Kenyon came in the fifth inning, when Illinois put together six singles to score four runs.

In game two against Marian, the Owls again got off to a quick start. This time, though, they maintained it.

After giving up two runs in the top of the first inning, the Owls exploded for four runs in the bottom of the inning. A McLaughlin double evened the score with Natalya Delsante and Maddie Friday coming around to score. Then, with McLaughlin aboard, Madison Buckwalter homered to left field. It was her team-leading second long ball of the season.

Marian regained the lead, 5-4, with three runs in the top of the third inning, but Kenyon had another answer in the bottom of the inning. Four straight singles from Friday, McLaughlin, Buckwalter and Jalomo wound up netting Kenyon three more runs.

Now holding a 7-5 lead, the Owls added insurance in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Jesse Leener, Delsante, and Archambeau all singled. Leener scored on the Archambeau single and, one batter later, Delsante scored on a groundout from Friday. In the fifth, Leener singled down the left field line to score Jalomo.

Sofia Zayas, Kenyon's starting pitcher, earned her first collegiate win after she went the distance, giving up five runs on seven hits and two walks.

Back at the plate, McLaughlin finished her day with a two-game combined stat line that included a 4-for-7 showing with a double, three runs scored and three RBI. Buckwalter didn't have a hit in game one, but she went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI in game two. Friday and Leener also had two hits in game two and Jalomo chalked up a combined 3-for-6 performance with a run and an RBI.
