Owls sweep their way past OWU for 10th win

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College women's tennis team picked up their 10th win and stayed perfect against North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) foes with a 9-0 sweep of Ohio Wesleyan University. The No. 32-ranked Owls won all 24 doubles games before securing 70 of the 72 singles points, improving to 10-3 (2-0 NCAC), while the Battling Bishops fell to 9-3 (0-1 NCAC).

Kenyon won all three doubles matches in under 30 minutes before wrapping up all six singles wins in fewer than 50 minutes. Shadia Amado Aguad contributed to the fastest doubles and singles finish, and she started the day with an 8-0 sweep at No. 2 doubles with Eleni Dakos. Allaire Berl and Eleni Lazaridou's 8-0 win ended shortly after that at No. 1 before Irina Beshentseva and Erika Pontillo put the Owls up 3-0 with a third 8-0 doubles decision at No. 3.

Amado Aguad's singles sweep was nearly as quick as her doubles match. The first-year needed just about 30 minutes to clinch Kenyon's fourth point as she did not concede a game in her 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 2 match.

Berl, playing in the top singles spot, followed up with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep about nine minutes later, clinching the dual for the Owls at 5-0. Catriona MacIntosh continued the trend of dominant decisions with another 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 4 singles bout.

Dakos jumped ahead with a 6-0 victory in set one of the No. 3 match, but Ohio Wesleyan's Ryleigh Tillman tallied her team's first games in set two. Still, Dakos prevailed 6-2 in the second set, pushing Kenyon's advantage to 7-0 through the first four singles matches.

The Nos. 5 and 6 contests mirrored each other in both score and time, and Owls players prevailed 6-0, 6-0 in a pair of 46-minute matchups. Natalie Connelly cruised in her No. 5 match before Beshentseva capped Kenyon's 9-0 victory in the No. 6 spot.

The Owls have one more dual on deck this weekend and will compete for a third time in three days at the Jasper Tennis Center when they welcome Wittenberg University (6-7, 0-1 NCAC) to Gambier tomorrow, April 2. The conference contest will begin at noon and will likely be played indoors. Furthermore, Kenyon will celebrate its senior day at the dual, their final outing at home this season.
