Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Late surge powers Kenyon past Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- An extended surge that started late in the third quarter gave the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team all the room it needed to put away the Wittenberg University Tigers, 19-8, in Tuesday night North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) action from Edwards-Maurer Field.

Owning a 10-8 advantage, Kenyon scored four times in the final 4:30 of the third quarter and stretched its lead to six at 14-8. Chase MacCartee, Jack Giuffre, and David Chintala, who scored twice in the run, were responsible for the quartet of goals that changed the tone of the game.

From there, the floodgates opened. Kenyon outscored Wittenberg 5-0 in the final quarter, closing out the contest with nine unanswered goals and running its season records to 10-1 overall and 3-1 in NCAC play.

Throughout the game, Giuffre was a thorn in the Tigers side. Each time Wittenberg pulled within striking distance, Giuffre snapped the momentum with a Kenyon goal. In all, Giuffre amassed a game-high six goals and increased his team-leading season total to 43 points.

Early in the game, Wittenberg took a 2-1 lead, but Kenyon quickly overcame that with goals from Colin McCarthy and Gavin Gumucio. Giuffre then made his presence known with two straight, giving the Owls a 5-2 lead before Wittenberg answered with one goal.

For most of the second quarter, the Owls offense was stymied by Wittenberg goalkeeper Chase Singleton, who made five saves in the frame. At the other end of the field, the Tigers scored a pair of goals within a two-minute span and tied the game up at 5-5 with 4:30 left on the clock.

Roughly two minutes later, Wittenberg was whistled for a slash and ten seconds into the man-up situation, Joe Boesel scored off an assist from Chintala. Giuffre then fired in two unassisted goals to give Kenyon a three-goal cushion at intermission.

That margin remained fairly steady throughout third-quarter action as the teams traded goals. Chintala netted two more for the Owls, while Giuffre pumped in his fifth, making the score 11-8 in Kenyon's favor and setting the stage for the Owls impressive finish.

After rattling off 26 shots in the first half, the Owls exploded for 20 in the third and 25 more in the fourth, giving them, by far, a season-high 71 shots for the game.

In addition to Giuffre's six goals, Kenyon got four from Chintala and two from MacCartee, Gumucio, and Nathan Kissela.

Adam Hall played all but six-and-a-half minutes in net and made 10 saves for Kenyon, helping drop Wittenberg to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in the NCAC.
