CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. -- Playing in its penultimate game of the regular season, the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team secured its sixth straight win with a 26-4 decision at Wabash College. The victory boosted the Owls' record to 13-1 overall and 6-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC), while the Little Giants fell to 7-7 and 1-5 in the NCAC.
The 26 goals marked Kenyon's second-most this season, trailing only a 28-goal outing two games ago at Hiram College. Like their game against the Terriers, the Owls scored early and often, building a 21-2 advantage by halftime. An impressive 19 of Kenyon's 26 goals came with an assist as the Owls spread the wealth. The assist total ties for the third-highest mark in Kenyon's history and is just one behind the team record of 20.
The Owls set the tone early with eight straight goals to open the game. Gavin Gumucio scored the first two and added an assist over the stretch, while Kenyon's leading scorer, David Chintala, garnered three goals and one dime. Wabash broke through at the end of the period, but the Owls added to late goals to build a 10-1 first-quarter lead.
It was more of the same in quarter two as the Owls rattled off nine straight scores. The Little Giants tacked another goal onto the board after converting an extra-man opportunity, but Kenyon scored the final two goals of the half. With benches emptied and time winding down, the Owls outscored Wabash 3-1 in the third quarter and 2-1 in the fourth frame.
Chintala and Gumucio matched each other with five goals and three assists apiece, all coming in the first half. Chintala added a ground ball, while Gumucio caused a turnover and posted a perfect shooting percentage, 5 for 5, in the outing. Senior Jack Giuffre contributed three goals and two assists, while 11 other Owls tacked on goals.Â
Kenyon dominated possession thanks to a 28-5 advantage in the faceoff circle. Thomas Nelson led the Owls with 20 wins in 21 attempts, tying for his second-most in a game this season. The sophomore also grabbed a game-high 17 ground balls, helping the Owls build a 58-22 margin.
Adam Hall earned the win in goal after allowing two goals and posting two saves in the first half. Ryan Matarese secured three saves and allowed a goal in the third period, while Jack McClellan notched four saves with one goal allowed in the fourth frame.
Kenyon's final regular-season contest is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25, at Oberlin College (7-6, 3-3 NCAC). Once the regular-season standings shake out, the NCAC Tournament will begin on Wednesday, May 3.
