Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Owls hold off Oberlin, take share of NCAC title

OBERLIN, Ohio -- With Tuesday's 15-12 victory in its regular-season finale at Oberlin College, the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team secured at least a share of the 2023 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) regular-season title.

The win over the Yeomen moved No. 24-ranked Kenyon to 14-1 overall and finalized its conference mark at 7-1. Both Denison University and Ohio Wesleyan University also have one loss within the conference and both still have two NCAC games to be played.

The NCAC regular-season title is Kenyon's second overall and first since the 2000 season. The Owls' 14-1 regular-season record is the seventh one-loss season in program history and the team's winning percentage (.933) is currently second only to Kenyon's 1955 team that went 8-0. Additionally, the 14 wins tie the program record for most in a season.

Tuesday was a battle, however, as a gritty Oberlin team gave the Owls all they could handle. The teams traded a couple goals to start the game. Kenyon then went on a three-goal run in which Colin McCarthy scored twice and Rowan Goldin scored once. The Owls got one more goal in the quarter from David Chintala, but it was surrounded by two from Oberlin, pushing the game into the second quarter with Kenyon ahead 6-4.

Oberlin (7-7, 3-4 NCAC) maintained pace with Kenyon in the second, as both teams scored twice and went into the break with the Owls in front 8-6.

Early in the third, Kenyon gained a little more breathing room when McCarthy, Rollins Heath, and Chintala scored again. At that point, the Owls owned an 11-7 lead. Oberlin, again, charged back. The Yeomen scored the last two goals of the third quarter and the first goal of the fourth quarter to pull within one, at 11-10, with 11:28 left in the game.

Still not willing to relinquish the lead, Kenyon stopped the Oberlin momentum with a four-goal outburst that, ultimately, decided the result. Goldin scored two of those four goals. Joe Boesel scored one and Gavin Gumucio scored the other. That put Kenyon ahead 15-10 with a little more than four minutes remaining in the game.

Goldin and McCarthy both finished with a game-high four goals, while Chintala contributed two. Jack Giuffre and Heath both finished with a goal and an assist.

Most team stats were similar. Kenyon did, however, win 21-of-30 faceoffs (70 percent). Thomas Nelson went 14-of-19 and Will Jordan was 7-of-11.

Adam Hall played all 60 minutes in front of the Kenyon cage and made 14 saves.

The Owls now turn their attention to the postseason. While all the details won't be clear until the other conference teams finish their schedules, Kenyon will host, next week, a semifinal game of the four-team NCAC Tournament.
