Tigers sweep, spoil Owls’ home-opening games

GAMBIER, Ohio -- After many postponements and cancellations, mainly due to weather, the Kenyon College softball team finally got to play on its home field for the first time this season. The advantage didn't quite take hold, however, and the visiting Tigers from DePauw University walked away with a pair of 10-2 victories.

The first game of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) doubleheader went all seven innings, but game two was halted in the fifth via the NCAA five-inning run rule. The two losses dropped Kenyon to 1-21 overall and 0-4 in the NCAC. The sweep moved the Tigers to 7-16 overall and 2-0 in conference competition.

DePauw drew first blood in game one, scoring once in the second inning off Kenyon starting pitcher Allison McCutchen. In the third, a misplayed ball in right field led to three more runs for the Tigers.

Trailing 4-0, the Owls offense answered in the bottom of the third. Natalya Delsante led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. Madison Buckwalter then doubled to right center, scoring Delsante. The next batter, Maddie Friday, roped another double, allowing Buckwalter to score.

Although Kenyon managed 11 hits in game one, those two, third-inning runs were all the team could muster. Hitting out of the four-hole, Friday went 3-for-4. Delsante, Buckwalter, and Maeve McLaughlin all went 2-for-4.

DePauw, which had 13 game-one hits, came alive late, scoring six more runs over the final three innings. McCutchen went five innings and took the pitching loss. Sofia Zayas pitched the final two innings.

Kenyon had four errors in game one, but only one really affected the scoring. In game two, that was not the case. The Owls committed four more errors and gifted three runs to the Tigers.

Zayas pitched all five innings of game two, walked just one, and yielded a dozen hits. DePauw roughed her up for four runs in the fourth inning and then put a five spot on the board in the top of the fifth.

Meanwhile, the Tigers' starting pitcher, Megan Asher, consistently stymied Kenyon batters. She pitched the first four innings and then came back in when reliever Kandra Butcher ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth. In all, Asher went five innings, struck out six, and allowed just one hit.

In the bottom of the fifth, Kenyon scrambled to avoid the run rule and it nearly accomplished that goal. Arianna Jalomo singled off Butcher to open the inning. Paige Milhon and Samantha Goldenson then drew walks to load the bases with no one out. Asher came back in, but she walked Sophia Lynch, pushing Jalomo home. The Owls got a groundout RBI from Nicole Archambeau to score their other run, but Asher closed the door with her two final strike outs of the game.

Kenyon has two more conference home games on tap. That doubleheader will be against The College of Wooster and will start at 3:30 on Wednesday.
