GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's lacrosse team picked up its ninth win in 10 tries this season, taking down the DePauw University Tigers (5-5, 0-2 NCAC) on senior day at The Field at Benson. The Owls' 11-3 victory over the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) foe was Kenyon's second straight, improving to 2-1 in the conference.
The Owls sent a 13-man senior class off with a dominant win in Kenyon's penultimate home game. The class of 2023 includes Jack Giuffre, Bart Gardella, Finn Murray, Mike Bazzano, Graham O'Brien, Nathan Junk, Connor Doughty, Bennett Hudson, Leo Cowie, Joe Boesel, Jack Napper, James Zarifes, and Evan Bongers, and the baker's dozen ran their record to 34-7 over the last four years. The .829 winning percentage is one of the most prolific four-year stretches in Kenyon's history.
Kenyon needed just over a minute to take a lead they would not relinquish. Rollins Heath, the reigning NCAC Athlete of the Week, connected on an unassisted score at the 13:56 mark, putting the Owls up 1-0.
Despite turning the ball over more than they would have liked, Kenyon kept control and built a 4-0 lead through the opening period. Chase MacCartee scored after an assist from Rowan Goldin, and Goldin scored the Owls' third goal before Heath closed the quarter with another goal.
Kenyon maintained the pressure in the second period, scoring twice to push ahead 6-0 thanks to Colin McCarthy and Giuffre. The Tigers finally got on the board with 2:41 left in the half, sneaking a ball into the bottom left corner of the net that cut Kenyon's lead to five.
Bongers got the goal back six minutes into the third quarter when David Chintala assisted on Kenyon's seventh score. The teams combined for seven turnovers over the next seven minutes, but Hill Carter took over with the clock under two minutes. The sophomore scored his first two goals of the season in a 1:05 span, putting the Owls up 9-1 before the start of the final frame.
Cowie converted Kenyon's 10th goal of the game off an assist from David Lifson, and Carter kept it rolling with a third goal just over a minute later, increasing the Owls' margin to double-digits, 11-1.Â
Adam Hall fended off two DePauw shots shortly thereafter, including one save, before getting the rest of the day off. The sophomore finished with eight saves and just one goal allowed, good for a .889 save percentage.
Ryan Matarese took over in the net and saved the first shot he faced, but the Tigers turned an Owls turnover into a goal 20 seconds later to make it an 11-2 game. DePauw added another score with 2:28 left to play, and Kenyon closed the game with an 11-3 edge on the scoreboard.Â
Carter paced the Owls with three goals, joining Heath as the only two players to scratch twice as eight total Owls garnered goals. Gavin Gumucio dished out a game-high two assists, joining Carter, Heath, and Goldin in tallying multiple points. Defensively, Murray was the main man, recording team-highs of seven ground balls and two caused turnovers. In the face-off circle, Thomas Nelson went 11-12 while Will Jordan was 3-6.
Kenyon's next outing is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11, when the Owls head to Springfield, Ohio, to take on the Wittenberg University Tigers (5-6, 1-2 NCAC).
