Lazaridou into semifinal, doubles team eliminated

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Day two of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships was a mixed bag of results for Kenyon College first-years Eleni Lazaridou and Allaire Berl. Lazaridou notched another singles win to advance to the semifinal round, but later in the day she and Berl were ousted in the second round of doubles competition.

Lazaridou's stellar showing in the singles bracket continued, but the first-year had to fight to come out on top in her quarterfinal matchup. After dropping the first point to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sarah Pertsemlidis, Lazaridou won four of the next five en route to a 6-4 set-one win.

Lazaridou, the tournament's No. 4 seed, was one point away from clinching the victory after building a 5-4 lead, but Pertsemlidis did not go down easily. The senior battled back to win three straight points, forcing a third set with a 7-5 victory in the second.

Set three was another tightly-contested bout. Lazaridou worked her way up to a 4-2 advantage, but Pertsemlidis responded with three straight wins to go ahead 5-4. With her back against the wall, Lazaridou evened the deciding set at 5-5, and clawed back again after going down 6-5 to force a tiebreaker. Her hard work paid off, as she capped a 7-6 comeback victory with an impressive 7-2 win in the tiebreaker.

Lazaridou can play her way into Monday's Championship match, but she first has to face Babson College sophomore Olivia Soffer, the tournament's No. 1 seed. Their semifinal match is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. on Sunday.

Soffer advanced to the semifinal with a hard-fought, three-set win of her own. The sophomore won 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in Saturday's quarterfinal round. Soffer has posted a 30-1 overall singles record for Babson, going 13-0 in duals and 14-1 in tournament settings.

When the scene switched to doubles play, Kenyon ran out of steam. After posting a 6-2, 6-4 win in yesterday's first round, Lazaridou and Berl couldn't get things going in Saturday's second round and fell, 6-1, 6-1 to Sewanee's pairing of Brooke Despriet and Katherine Petty.

The loss closed out the Kenyon doubles team's season with a 12-3 record.
