Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Owls edged in season-opening shootout

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Offense was abundant Friday afternoon as the Kenyon College field hockey team opened its 2023 season at Rhodes College. The Owls racked up three goals, but the host Lynx matched that number and then netted the game-winner in overtime.

Rhodes opened the scoring about six minutes from the start. Taking a penalty corner, Elinor West inbounded the ball to Sophie Croci, who fired a rocket toward the Owls' left goal post. West, who entered the field of play after inserting the pass, got in position to redirect Croci's shot past Kenyon goalkeeper Megan Lydon.

Early in the second quarter, the Owls notched the equalizer. Grace Lane carried the bulk of the load, as she drove the left side, beat two defenders and got to the middle of the circle, where she fired a shot. Her shot went just to the right of Rhodes goalkeeper Cat Gluodenis and Kenyon junior Ella Haskins was in place to steer it into the cage.

A little more than nine minutes later, Kenyon tallied another goal, this time on a breakaway from first-year Maren Lawrence. Kick-starting the play, senior Hannah Paprotna sent a long lead pass through the middle of the defense. It was deflected by a Lynx defender and then squirted over to Lawrence, who was already running at full steam. Taking her momentum, and the ball, toward the goal, she fired her shot inside the left post, giving the Owls a 2-1 advantage, which held up through the end of the half.

The Lynx then temporarily knocked the wind out of the Owls, scoring twice in the third quarter. During a four-minute span, Alder Dickey tied up the game and then Bella Spina gave Rhodes a 3-2 lead. Kenyon, however, bounced back with a late third-quarter goal from Haskins and squared the game as the teams headed for the final 15 minutes of play.

In the fourth quarter, Kenyon outshot Rhodes, 4-2, but could not get the game-winner past Gluodenis, so an extra frame was necessary.

One minute and twenty seconds into the overtime, the Lynx tallied the deciding goal. It occurred following a penalty corner in which Ellie Pratka stationed herself at the left post and lifted a high shot into the Kenyon cage.

Overall, Rhodes outshot Kenyon 16-10 and had a huge 17-5 advantage in corners. Lydon made eight saves for the Owls, while Gluodenis made seven for the Lynx.

Kenyon will return to the same field tomorrow to take on Lincoln Memorial University in a neutral-site game at noon CDT.
