Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Lane scores three, leads Owls to victory

MEMPHIS, Tenn -- Kenyon College junior Grace Lane had the game of her collegiate career Saturday, as she scored three times and led the Owls field hockey team to a 3-2 overtime win in a neutral-site contest against the Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitters.

Lane's first goal of the game hit the back of the Railsplitters cage with just four seconds to go in the first quarter of play. It came off a penalty corner inserted by sophomore Raigan Hutter, who notched her first assist of the season.

That goal also evened out the score at 1-1. Lincoln Memorial scored the game's first goal, also off a penalty corner, 3:55 from the start.

Kenyon controlled the second quarter, but could not get a shot past Railsplitters goalie Ana Carney, who ended up making 15 saves throughout the game.

Early in the third quarter, while trying to make a play in the shooting circle, Lane was tripped up by Carney. Lane was awarded a penalty stroke and she buried it to give the Owls a 2-1 advantage.

Just 44 seconds into the fourth quarter, the Railsplitters evened the game back up. They did so when Haley White redirected a Guadalupe Montaldo shot by steeping in front of Kenyon goalie Megan Lydon and tipping the ball to her right.

Lincoln Memorial outshot Kenyon, 4-3, the rest of the fourth quarter, but no goals were scored and an overtime session was needed to decide a winner.

In overtime, Lane went to work again. When she found herself in a one-on-one situation with Carney, she was taken down again, resulting in another penalty stroke. Lane then fired a bullet into the lower left corner of the cage and sealed the deal for the Owls, who improved to 1-1 with the win.
