Owls shut out Oles to even season record

GAMBIER, Ohio – The fifth-ranked Kenyon Owls were victorious on Sunday afternoon at Mavec Field against the No. 14-ranked St. Olaf Oles in the first-ever matchup between the two programs, allowing no goals on the way to a 2-0 win.

The game was a reunion for first-year head coach Travis Wall, who served as the head coach of St. Olaf College for four seasons. Today for the Owls, however, Wall led the team to its second win in three days, evening the team's record at 2-2.

Kenyon's offense came out fast, dominating possession and putting St. Olaf on its heels early. The first goal came in the game's third minute, as Joaquin Sanchez-Korenfeld one-touched a long pass from Vic Bravo through two defenders right to Alem Duratovic, who rocketed a shot and beat the goalkeeper and crashing defender, sending the Owls up 1-0 early.

St. Olaf responded with a flurry of shots throughout the rest of the first half but was denied any goals, despite outshooting Kenyon 11-6 and holding the corner kick advantage 3-2. The Owls' staunch defense and goalkeeper Jack Pedreschi's two saves were able to keep the Oles scoreless through the end of the first half.

The Owls came out of halftime ready to extend the lead and wasted little time in doing so. After a turnover in the defensive end for St. Olaf, Aidan Burns lined up to take the throw in the 50th minute. He lofted a ball from the far sideline into the goal area for Ben Lantz, who leaped up over two St. Olaf defenders and headed it over the goalkeeper, making it 2-0 Owls.

The remainder of the second half resembled the first, as Kenyon's defense showed tremendous toughness and did not let a goal through, as the Oles doubled up the Owls on shots for the game and led in corner kicks 6-5, with Jack Pedreschi adding two more saves in net in the second.

The Owls' win was the team's final game in the Fred Myers-Adidas® Invitational put on by Ohio Wesleyan University, in which Kenyon went 2-0.

Kenyon will look to add to their win streak and achieve an over .500 record for the first time this season on Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. in Gambier for a matchup against the Wilmington College Quakers.
