Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Owls take first conference game on the road

OBERLIN, Ohio – The Kenyon College field hockey team looked strong in its first North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) matchup of the 2023 season on Wednesday night, beating the Oberlin College Yoewomen 1-0 in the first of five straight road games.

The shutout win adds to Kenyon's historical domination in field hockey over Oberlin, strengthening the all-time record to a resounding 25-1, and continues the current five-season streak of not conceding a goal to the Yeowomen.

In the first quarter, the Owls controlled possession from the start and created several scoring chances on offense, but could not find the back of the net. The Owls outshot the Yeowomen 5-0 and had a 2-0 corner advantage, with senior Hannah Paprotna leading the way with three first quarter shots.

Through most of the second quarter, the story remained the same, with the Owls attack persisting and the defense hounding the Oberlin attackers, not letting the Yeowomen gain any momentum.

Then, with 1:38 remaining in the half, Paprotna lined up to take a penalty corner and zipped a pass to freshman Maren Lawrence. Lawrence quickly glided the ball across the circle to Grace Lane, who ripped a shot through a cluster of Oberlin defenders and into the top of the net, making it 1-0 Owls going into halftime.

Lane's goal was her fifth of the season, adding to her team high eleven points and setting her as the team's leading goalscorer. For Lawrence, her first assist of the season moves her point total to seven, ranking third on the team.

In the third and fourth quarters, the score remained deadlocked at 1-0. The Owls just could not break through, despite outshooting the Yeowomen 10-0 and holding a 7-0 corner advantage. The team continued a commanding offensive presence highlighted by excellent chances from Lane, Paprotna, and sophomore Lana Stone.

Oberlin goalkeeper Janny McCormik had a strong outing in net, stopping seven shots and keeping Kenyon's offense to a single score. Offensively, the Owls outshot the Yeowomen 19-0 and had a 12-0 advantage in corners. On the other side of the field, Kenyon goalkeeper Megan Lydon did not face any shots tonight, but certainly played a role in securing the team's first shutout victory of the season.

The victory moves Kenyon's record to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the NCAC.

The team looks to continue its momentum on the road with four more away games on the schedule, the next taking place on Saturday in Lynchburg, Virginia as the Owls face off against the University of Lynchburg Hornets at 1:00 pm.
