Lynchburg offense swarms Kenyon

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The No. 24-ranked University of Lynchburg Hornets unleashed a powerful offensive attack that swarmed the Kenyon College defense and yielded a 9-1 field hockey win Saturday afternoon at Shellenberger Field.

The host Hornets generated a dozen shots and four penalty corners in the first quarter of play and produced similar numbers in the second quarter. The flurry led to six different Lynchburg players scoring goals and a 6-0 lead at the break. During that first half, Marlou Wendriks did the bulk of the damage, as she scored once and assisted on two other goals.

Two more Hornet goals found the Kenyon cage in the third quarter and one early in the fourth put a cap on the Lynchburg attack.

Kenyon fired off two shots in the third quarter and seven more in the fourth, but overall the Owls were outshot, 36-9.

With less than two minutes remaining in the game, Kenyon avoided the shutout with a goal from sophomore Lana Stone. The score developed off a penalty corner that was sent to first-year Casey Master. She ripped a pass toward the left side of the goal, where a Lynchburg defender stopped it, but couldn't control it. Stone charged the loose ball and flicked it over the line for her first goal of the season and the fourth of her career.

Keeping busy at the other end of the field, junior goalkeeper Megan Lydon made 13 saves in the loss, which dropped Kenyon to 3-3 and moved Lynchburg to 4-1.

The Owls will try to bounce back Sunday with an 11:30 a.m. match at Sweet Briar College.
