Owls snap losing streak, win in straight sets

HANOVER, Ind. – The Kenyon College volleyball team triumphed over the Berea College Bears on Friday night in Hanover, Indiana, winning in straight sets 25-23, 25-22, and 25-18.

The neutral-site match was the team's first in the Hanover College Invite, taking place over the weekend in Hanover, Indiana. This was the third all-time matchup between the Owls and the Bears, with Kenyon now holding the advantage at two games to one.

The match began with the two teams trading points, evening the first set at 5-5 early. After three straight attack errors by Berea, momentum began to swing towards Kenyon. Kills by Lindsey Abramson, Bryn Carrigan, and Aura Barinas rallied the Owls to open the largest lead of the first set with an 18-12 advantage. The Bears tried to battle back, eventually drawing to within one at 23-22, but Kenyon prevailed to win the first set 25-23. Abramson led the Owls with six kills, hitting at a .357 clip.

Kenyon began the second set strong, opening a 10-5 lead off of impactful kills by Abramson and Maggie Wolf, and an ace from first-year Hannah Schwemm. Much like the first set, Berea went on a 9-5 run to make it 15-14 in the middle of the second. The Owls' staunch defense recorded four blocks in the set to Berea's one, and Kenyon was able to pull away late to win the second set 25-22. Sophomore Becca Gwynne had four kills in the second set, helping to put the Owls up two sets to none heading into the third.

The third set was all Kenyon, getting ahead early and keeping the advantage, never trailing in the set and tying only when the score was 1-1. The team opened up their largest lead of the match after a 14-3 run to make it 15-4. The Owls never looked back and despite a late charge yet again from the Bears, Kenyon prevailed and won the final set 25-18.

Abramson led the way for the Owls, gaining a match high 22 points with 18 kills hitting at and impressive .444. She also was tied for first on the team with two blocks, while Gwynne, Barinas, and Sophia Menke matched with two apiece. Wolf also contributed massively throughout the game, handing out a game-high 31 assists.

The win snaps the team's six-game losing streak, moving the season record to 3-7. The Owls look to continue the positive momentum tomorrow, embarking on a double-header against Sewanee at 12:00 pm and Anderson University at 2:00 pm in Hanover.
