Tigers, Ravens deal Owls pair of losses

HANOVER, Ind. -- Finishing off the two-day Hanover College Invitational on Saturday, the Kenyon College volleyball team came up empty against Sewanee and Anderson University. The Owls fell to the Tigers 25-17, 25-11, 25-13 before dropping a tight 23-25, 25-15, 20-25, 25-22, 15-12 match with the Ravens.

Against Anderson, in the team's second match of the day, the Owls turned a 20-17 deficit into a set-one win. They did so by benefiting from four Anderson errors and coupling them with kills from Aura Barinas and Maggie Wolf to string together six straight points.

The Ravens (4-5) fought back with a convincing 10-point set-two victory, but Kenyon did not fade. The Owls went back-and-forth with Ravens in the next set and jumped ahead 14-9, only to have Anderson close within one point, at 19-18. From there, Kenyon got kills from Rachel Ferrara and Becca Gwynne and, later, another kill from Gwynne and an ace from Lauren Blakemore sparked a finishing run for the Owls.

In the fourth set, the Ravens turned the tables, scoring six of the set's last nine points to force a deciding set, one in which Anderson jumped out to early 3-0 and 5-2 leads. Kenyon retaliated with kills from Sophia Menke and Lindsey Abramson to close the gap to 7-6, but Anderson then scored the next five points to jump ahead 12-6.

As things went down to the wire, Kenyon went on a last-second 5-1 run to make the score 14-12. Anderson, however, got a kill to put the set, and the match, away.

Against Sewanee, the Owls did not get the day started out the way they had planned. The Tigers rattled off the first nine points of the first set. Two Kenyon points followed, but Sewanee tacked on three more to build a 12-2 cushion. From there, Kenyon never got closer than six the rest of the way.

The start of the second set was a little more competitive, but the Tigers used a 10-3 run to take a 13-5 lead. When Barinas put down a kill for Kenyon, Sewanee responded with seven straight points and charged ahead 20-6 to secure the set win.

The Tigers (10-3) did not let up in the third set, racing out to a 6-0 start. A little later, two kills from Abramson closed the Owls within four points. The Tigers, again, had an answer as they whipped up a 7-1 run that gave them a 14-4 lead. Kenyon closed within six points on three more occasions, but couldn't trim the deficit any more than that.

On the day, Barinas and Abramson led Kenyon with 14 kills apiece, while Gwynne finished with 12 kills and a handful of blocks. Wolf cranked out 45 assists over the two matches and Blakemore amassed a team-high 42 digs. Menke rounded out the Kenyon leaders with five blocks that complemented her seven kills.

The losses dropped Kenyon to 3-9. The Owls will now look ahead to their first conference match of the season. That contest will take place next Saturday at Oberlin College.
