Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Owls top Vixens in overtime

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Kenyon College field hockey team stayed in Virginia for its second game in as many days to face off against the Sweet Briar College Vixens, in the first-ever matchup between the two teams.

In an overtime thriller, the Owls were victorious, besting the Vixens 2-1, with Maren Lawrence notching the deciding goal.

Looking to bounce back from a tough loss yesterday, the Owls came out looking for an early goal. A quick shot off the post from Lawrence and a good chance from Raigan Hutter set the tone offensively for the Owls, but couldn't get anything to the back of the net.  Defensively, the team was tested late in the quarter, as the Vixens had two corners and two shots to end the first, but the defense led by goalkeeper Megan Lydon stood tall to hold the score 0-0 after 15 minutes.

The majority of the second quarter was played in the midfield, with both teams trading possession and recording one shot apiece. Then, with about three minutes to play in the half, Grace Lane cleared a ball from just over midfield to the near corner, which looked like it was heading out of bounds. Lawrence made an excellent play to run the ball down, charge the net, and cause an Owls corner.

Hannah Paprotna lined up to take the corner and slung a pass through the circle to Hutter. Hutter zipped the ball back through the top circle to an uncovered Lane, who sent a low missile to the far side right post, beating the Vixens goalkeeper and making it 1-0 Owls heading into half.

The Vixens outshot the Owls 4-5 in the half, but the Owls 5-2 corner advantage, including the one leading to a goal, gave the team a meaningful edge. In net, Lydon made two saves and Ashley Maggiora made one for the Vixens.

Out of the half, Kenyon came out with an offensive fire, possessing the ball for the majority of the opening minutes and creating good scoring chances off that possession. The team's best chances however came in the final minutes of the third, as the Owls had 4 consecutive corners leading to four consecutive shots. The Owls could not find the back of the net, but outshot the Vixens 5-2 in the quarter and had a 5-1 corner advantage.

In the fourth, it was the Vixens' turn to dial up the pressure, jumping out to a 3-0 shot and corner advantage early. Just past the ten-minute mark remaining in the quarter, a costly turnover gave the ball back to Sweet Briar in the Owls defensive zone. Jolin Daughety drove to the net, boxed out a Kenyon defender, and slipped a pass behind her to a crashing Gigi Hutman, who popped the ball over Lydon and into the net, tying the game at one with over half the quarter to play.

For the rest of regulation, the two teams traded possession, with Sweet Briar outshooting Kenyon 5-1 and maintaining its 3-0 corner advantage. A late push by Kenyon was unsuccessful, and the game headed to overtime.

Overtime began with excellent chances by Lane and Lawrence, which both were stopped by the Vixen defense. After a brief clearance by Sweet Briar, the ball found Lane off of a long pass from the Owls' defensive zone. Lane drove through the midfield and threaded a lengthy pass through two Vixen defenders to Lawrence, who made a move to beat the charging keeper and buried it in the back of the net, winning the game for Kenyon in overtime 2-1.

Shots were even for the game at 12-12, but Kenyon's corner advantage 11-6 and three assists proved to be the difference today. Lane led the Owls with four shots, while Lawrence and Casey Master each contributed two. Defensively, Lydon made a game-high six saves in net, and Maggiora made three for the Vixens.

The Owls (4-3) travel back to Ohio but stay on the road Tuesday for their second North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) game of the season. Kenyon will play the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops in Delaware at 7:00 pm.
