Owls toppled by Tigers in NCAC opener

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- The Kenyon College football team commenced its North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) schedule against Wittenberg University on Saturday night in Springfield, Ohio, and the Tigers (2-0, 1-0 NCAC) defended their home field with a 56-17 win over the Owls (0-3, 0-1 NCAC).

Wittenberg outgained Kenyon 477-221 overall, including 229-97 through the air and 248-124 On the ground. Turnovers hurt the Owls, who coughed up two fumbles and issued an interception without taking the ball away from the Tigers.

After holding the home team to seven points in the first quarter, the Owls got on the board early in the second frame. Tyler Bell connected on a 20-yard field goal after a 15-play, 65-yard Kenyon drive that ate 8:21 off the clock and cut the deficit to 7-3. However, it was all Wittenberg after that.

The Tigers scored 28 unanswered points in the second quarter and ran the streak to 39 straight points after two more touchdowns in the third and one more in the fourth. At that point, with a little over 14 minutes remaining, Wittenberg led 56-3.

Kenyon's two-headed rushing duo of Jordon Benjamin and Drake Lewis each punched in touchdowns late in the game, giving the running backs five combined touchdowns through three games. Benjamin's touchdown was a 60-yard catch and run, his first receiving score this season, while Lewis found the end zone from three yards out for his third rushing touchdown of the year.

On the other side of the ball, first-year Dominic Simpson led the Owls defense with 11 tackles, including six solo and five assists.

Up next, Kenyon heads to Wooster, Ohio, to take on The College of Wooster (1-2, 0-1 NCAC) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 23.
