Tigers pounce on Owls as late charge falls short

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College field hockey team (4-6) hosted the DePauw University Tigers (7-3) Saturday morning for the first game of Kenyon's 2023 Homecoming festivities. Despite a late offensive surge from the Owls in the fourth quarter, DePauw's lone goal was enough to seal the win for the Tigers 1-0.

DePauw, undefeated in conference play, entered the game on a five-game win streak while not allowing any goals in the previous three matchups. Conversely, Kenyon entered the game on a two-game losing streak, being shut out 0-4 in their past two NCAC matchups.

Kenyon goalkeeper Megan Lydon kept the Owls in the game, making big save after big save. Her eleven saves were the second-highest single-game total of the season, nearly matching her 13 in games vs. Lynchburg and Washington & Lee.

In the first, DePauw controlled possession and generated several offensive chances, outshooting the Owls 5-0 in the first quarter, and leading the corner deficit 3-0. Blocked shots from the Kenyon defenders and one Lydon save kept the Tigers offense scoreless, 0-0 at the end of one.

At the end of the first, Owls head coach Morgan Brozena challenged her team to get the first goal. Kenyon responded and came out firing in the early stages of the second, with shots from Maren Lawrence, Kiersten Hoffmann, and Grace Lane, with Lane's chance testing Tigers goalkeeper Bella Lauber three minutes after play resumed.

DePauw retaliated with scoring chances of their own for the rest of the quarter, with the Owls failing to record another shot. However, four saves from Lydon and staunch defense kept the score at 0-0 heading into halftime, the first scoreless half for DePauw in five games.

Late in the third, DePauw broke through, as Amy Apfelbaum buried a loose ball in front of the Owls net past a displaced Lydon, making it 1-0 Tigers. In the quarter, DePauw outshot Kenyon 6-0, and Lydon made five saves.

Momentum began to shift early in the fourth, as Hannah Paprotna lined up to take the penalty corner five minutes into the quarter. Four consecutive corners leading to four consecutive shots from Lane could not break through, as new DePauw goalkeeper Scarlett Oaks made three saves and had some help from the left post for the fourth.

The Owls were not deterred and continued the offensive pressure. Four minutes later off of two more penalty corner chances from Raigan Hutter, Lawrence and Lane again again tried the Tigers goalkeeper, but to no avail.

After a lengthy Tigers possession and another Lydon save, the Owls found the ball with less than a minute to play. Lawrence caused a midfield turnover and Lana Stone picked up the loose ball and drove down the field for a two-on-one with Lawrence. After drawing the defender just as she entered the circle, Stone dished it to Lawrence, and right before she could get a shot off, the charging Tigers goalkeeper slid forward and kicked the ball away to end the game 1-0 DePauw.

Lane had a team-high five shots on goal, and Lawrence chipped in with one. For the game, the Owls were outshot 18-9 but had a 7-6 corner advantage.

The loss drops Kenyon's record to 4-6 and 1-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Owls stay at home on Tuesday at 4:30 pm to face The College of Wooster in another NCAC bout.
