Owls fall in straight sets to Tigers

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Kenyon College volleyball team traveled to Springfield on Saturday afternoon for the team's second North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) matchup of the season against the Wittenburg University Tigers.

The Owls lost in straight sets 25-14, 25-19, and 25-21.

Wittenberg (3-10) entered the game with six straight losses, falling most recently to Transylvania University in the NCAC matchup. The win however adds to Wittenburg's historical dominance of the Kenyon, going a perfect 18-0 since 2009 on its way to 25 NCAC program titles.

In the first set, the Tigers jumped out to a 7-2 lead, and never quite let the Owls get comfortable, with the smallest lead of the set coming when the score was 1-0. In the set, the Owls were outhit by a margin of .043 to .429 and lost the kill advantage 13-6. The Owls attack did a good job of spreading the wealth in the first, recording kills from five different players.

Similar to the first set, the Tigers were able to build a 7-2 lead to start the second. Back-to-back kills from Sophia Menke kept the Owls in it, but Wittenburg was able to pull away late to a second-set victory 25-19.  The second set was a bit more even, with the Tigers outhitting the Owls .178 to -.079, but the 14-4 kill advantage proved to be the difference in the second.

In the third, the Owls broke out to their first leads of the game, leading the third set 4-3 off of an ace from Arianna Flota, and again at 5-4 from a nice Lindsey Abramson kill. The teams went back and forth for most of the final set, drawing even at 14 off of another Abramson kill assisted by Maggie Wolf. Wittenburg pulled away off of a 9-3 run and ended the set at 25-21. In the third, the Tigers outhit the Owls .194 to .148, but again the 14-6 kill advantage was the deciding factor.

For the game, Menke led the Owls in kills and points, notching six and hitting at a team-high .300. Wolf dished out 14 assists and Flota, Joy Carstanjen, and Bryn Carrigan added to the scoring with one ace apiece.

Defensively, Lauren Blakemore led Kenyon with eight digs, while Carrigan, Olivia Gumz, and Rachel Ferrara each recorded one block.

The loss drops Kenyon's season record to 3-12 and are yet to earn a win in the NCAC. The Owls are back in action on Wednesday as the team travels to Defiance, Ohio to take on the Defiance College Yellow Jackets at 7:00 pm.
