Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Owls hot start tapers off against Terriers

HIRAM, Ohio — In a game where each team had similar shooting days on the stat sheet, turnovers and points in the paint were the two glaring outliers for the Kenyon College Owls women's basketball team, who took on the Hiram College Terriers in a North Coast Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon from Hiram, Ohio.

Despite both teams hitting around 37 percent from the field and each hauling in 36 rebounds, Kenyon's 24-11 turnover margin led to over half of Hiram's total points, proving to be the difference today as the Owls fell 57-43.

Alyssa Gest led the Kenyon (3-15, 1-6 NCAC) squad, recording 17 points and hitting a career-high five threes at a 41.7 percent mark while adding three assists, one block, and one steal.

Early in the game, the Owls spread the ball well and got high-quality looks on the Terriers to take a 12-11 lead after the first quarter, as Gest, Claudia Cooke, Anissa Hardy, Mikayla Rudolph and Raine Hammel all got involved on the stat sheet and helped the Owls to a 46.2 percent mark from the field while holding an 11-5 rebound advantage.

After the Owls took the lead, Hiram started applying more pressure defensively in the backcourt and it caused Kenyon problems. The Owls recorded 12 turnovers in the first half leading to 11 points for the Terriers, nearly half of the team's total. This along with Kenyon's absence at the free throw line allowed Hiram to go on a 15-6 run in the second quarter and enter halftime up 26-18.

Out of halftime, the Owls tried to combat the stingy Terriers defense, as Gest hit a deep three and Cooke scored four straight points to cut the Hiram (7-10, 2-4 NCAC) lead to single digits with just over three minutes gone in the half.

However, after that point, Hiram began using the full-court press to its advantage again, causing seven turnovers in the quarter while shooting 50 percent from the field and ending the third up by 13, but Gest would keep the Owls within reach, hitting two more threes in the quarter to set the score 46-33 after 30 minutes.

Gest would open up the final quarter with another triple to bring the Owls within eight, and Hardy had a monster block on defense, but Kenyon went cold from the field for the rest of the day, shooting 23 percent in the fourth and eventually falling 57-43.

Cooke was second on the stat sheet for the Owls, recording eight points and a game-high ten rebounds. Hardy chipped in seven while Rudolph added six and a game-high six assists.

The Owls fall to 3-15 overall and 1-6 in the NCAC, and return to action on Wednesday, January 24th from Greencastle, Indiana to take on the DePauw University Tigers at 6:00 PM for another NCAC bout.
